Reggae icon, Peter Tosh was tortured and then shot to death by a group of men demanding money from him.
Sad story as from what I've read he had a reputation as a very upbeat, good humored guy (and played that way) but apparently had depression struggles hidden under that.
Is there any need for this thread? Most of the examples already given are pretty well known. There is nothing inherently 'bizarre' about a guy getting run over, just because he happens to be in a band, and there is already more than 50 pages covering pretty much the same ground here. The Cruelest and Saddest Deaths in Music History
Drummer Jeff Porcaro died after falling ill while spraying insecticide in the yard of his home. If I recall correctly, he also had heart disease but the bug spray was likely a contributing cause of death.
Another theory is that an RAF plane returning to England unloaded its bombs in the Channel before landing. Unfortunately, unseen in the fog was Miller's plane below.
If you can excuse my mentioning a non-musician, there is the story of Deep Purple playing in Indonesia and a roadie falling/being pushed down an elevator shaft at the hotel: Just Backdated: DEEP PURPLE - Trouble In Jakarta
Former Abba drummer Ola Brunkert died when he fell through a window, separating the kitchen from the garden.
Randy Rhodes had a freak accident crashing a small plane while trying to fly as close as possible over the tour bus.
That is, he was a passenger on the plane where the pilot tried to "buzz" the tour bus. I've read speculation that the pilot was suicidal and trying to crash the plane into the bus and kill everyone there too and Rhoads helped stop that.
Guitarist D Boon of The Minutemen died of a broken neck when their touring van's rear axle broke and they ran off the road. He was sleeping in back at the time and was ejected from the van. Sadly, he was yet another member of the now well known "27 Club", dying at the age of 27.
There are a few interesting theories, like that, out there. Another good one is that he was Eisenhower's personal envoy, on a mission to meet with Hitler & broker a peace deal and the plane was shot down by forces opposed to that idea.
Frederik van Pallandt (from 50s Calypso-duo Nina & Frederik) was shot dead in 1994 in his hut in the Philippines. First reports talked of a house-robbery gone wrong. But rumours has it, that he was shot dead by members of a narcotics-syndicate which he was somehow involved with.......
...and moreover, Meek was paranoid about Spector, who he thought was trying to steal his sounds. He would not take phone calls from him.
I'm not sure that "bizarre" is the right word, but I always thought it was highly ironic that Harry Chapin, whose most famous song was "Taxi", died as a result of a car crash.
Another rather unusual one: Sonny Bonodied in a skiing accident, supposedly due to crashing into a tree. This was of course long after he had left the music business behind in favour f politics, becoming a Republican senator. At one time there was a conspiracy theory going around that it was not an accident, but I don't think anything ever came of that rumour.
I once saw a news report about a doo-wop singer's funeral. The last surviving member walked up to the podium to deliver the eulogy and he collapsed dead on the spot. I wish I could remember their names.
