I think CSN(&Y) are more counterpoint to The Hollies than The Beach Boys. Aerosmith's lead singer Mick Tyler bears a striking resemblance to The Stones' lead singer Steven Jagger. Or did I get them mixed up?
Here are the differences: - The Velvet Underground aren’t pretentious. Pink Floyd is the dictionary entry for pretentious. - Punk rockers love VU. They detest Pink Floyd. - VU had a raw, original sound. Pink Floyd played a style of music that a that a thousand others played better (Caravan for one) To summarise, I can’t think of a band LESS like the Velvet Underground than Pink Floyd.
Nirvana and Bush. Two unspeakably talented bands who combined 70s punk/rock and 80s indie influences to create their own dark, brooding sounds, who both released breakthrough albums in the early 1990s packed with riffs, dynamics and hooks. The people who say "Bush are just a Nirvana ripoff" can have a day off; Nirvana and Bush share a lot of similar influences - Neil Young for one - and if two people use similar ingredients to make a pie and the two pies taste similar, why react with such stupid allegations in the face of the musical equivalent? Also, when did Nirvana ever do anything like "Machinehead" or "Body"?
I think this person was comparing only early Pink Floyd to Velvet Underground. They were more raw and experimental to begin with.
When I first heard The Dandy Warhols, I had assumed they were from the UK and part of the Brit Pop Era. I then found out they were from Portland, Oregon. So, not comparing them to a specific British Band, but just sounded like they were one of several British Bands, who started out in the Mid 1990s, although their most well known Album was released in 2000.
I’ve only read the first three pages of this and... stone me! I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a whacked out collection of demented perception. What the hell are some of you hearing? There’s too much crazy here to be explained away as simple trolling surely? Van Halen / Public Image! Amazing.
I was thinking exactly the same. In most case it's 2 bands who sound completely different. The only genuine (IMO) comparison I have seen is Dylan / Donovan Although a case might be made for CCR and Status Quo - especially given that Quo's best known song is a cover of a John Fogerty track (Rocking all over the world)?
