I just read Robby Krieger's memoir and as I recall he said Howard Werth from the band Audience was the only singer he remembered auditioning to replace Morrison.

He was definitely in the Hollies circle at the time, doing sessions, socialising with them and the Hollies published some of his songs. Would have been a well paying job at a time when he noted that he couldn't afford their lifestyle in clubs etc. I'll look for a proper reference!

My understanding is that the Doors connection was true.
As I understand it Manzarek came to the UK and couldn't locate Paul who only heard this story of being sought by Ray decades later.

VERY few people actually auditioned for Genesis when Peter left. The band had recorded the entire album (bar the vocals) without a singer and I remember only one person being mentioned as having been brought in to sing over any of the finished tracks. IIRC his name was Mick Strickland, the song was Squonk, it was in the wrong key for him, so they moved on - as to accept him they would have had to record that song (and others?) over again from scratch in his key.

From everything I read the "so-called" auditions consisted of people sending in tapes, with the Charisma office staff listening to those submissions and throwing out most of them (the ones that ranged from average to hopeless) and then passing along the most promising tapes to the band.

All the names that keep coming up as having been auditioned for Genesis, are simply names/phone numbers on a sheet of paper that is often shown in books and on Genesis TV documentaries.

I highly doubt that Colin Blunstone or Allan Clarke would have been among the tapes that needed to be sifted through. Could you imagine? It would be quite the insult to ask either of THEM to submit a tape before being considered.

Tony Banks (at least - not sure about the others) was a huge Zombies fan, so he definitely would have been very familiar with Colin's voice, and also been well aware how he would have been the wrong man for the job. Could you imagine him being able to replicate Gabriel's growl (like at the end of Musical Box or the "666" part of Supper's Ready, or on Back In NYC).

I highly doubt he or Allen Clarke actually got auditioned - since they've never been mentioned as making it into the studio to sing to the finished instrumental tracks for the album, and THAT would be a pretty important/notable thing to be mentioned in band biographies/documentaries if it actually happened, would it not?

Their names were on a piece of paper - and having your name and phone number written on a page of contact numbers is no proof that you've actually been auditioned.

Not to mention (for the less well known submitters) simply sending a tape of your singing to the band's management (with NO guarantee the band will even hear it - as like I said the Charisma office threw out a lot of tapes - probably the majority of them - while sifting through the tapes to find the best ones to pass along to the band) is nowhere near the equivalent of having been "auditioned" by the band.

I'm guessing it was in the late 90s when Journey knew that Perry wasn't coming back. Here's some quotes from an interview with Neal Schon:
    MelodicRock.com - Interviews.

How many other suggestions did you get?
We tried out the guy from Queensryche.

    So you did do that!
We tried Geoff Tate, yeah. He came out and we actually wrote a pretty cool song with him but he was not the right guy to cover the old material.
When we tried playing the older material it obviously was not the right guy.
But a super nice guy as well.

I'd guess that by the time Nash left the Hollies Elton was set on making it as a solo artist and wouldn't have wanted to be in the band as a non-original member sharing the spotlight with other singers, but maybe it was tempting when he was scuffling.

oh wow. I know in the late 80's the job was Michael Boltons if he wanted it but all parties agreed that wasn't the way to go and journey went on hiatus

I bet a lot of people in L.A. in the 70's and 80's auditioned for Zappa.

His solo album title was a Zappa song lyric.

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned (is there a way to search one particular thread?) but Jay Jay French of Twisted Sister auditioned for the Gene and Paul for the band that would become KISS.

Neal Smith from the Original Alice Cooper Group once auditioned for Twisted Sister but didn't get the gig.

Also, Kerry King from Slayer played a handful of shows with Megadeth back in the 80's but I don't know if that could be considered an audition.

@DarrenNYC - There is. Go to the search bar and click on "search this thread only." (Doing that myself I think you were the first to mention this story.)

Didn't Yes want Robert Fripp to audition after Peter Banks left? I can't wrap my head around what might have happened there, but I'm glad Steve Howe was their choice.

He did. Not accepted of course, but it led to Peter Sinfield producing Roxy's first album.

Few revelations here that are new to me. Tina Weymouth and Peter Hook for The Stones in the 1990s. I'm trying to imagine Tina onstage with Mick and Keith!

Recently, last 2-3 years, I contacted Chris Cutler (Henry Cow) as there was some rumour of Mark E Smith (The Fall) trying out/asking about joining Henry Cow.
He didn't know anything about it.

Didn't Terry Reid audition to be the lead singer for the New Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin? Donovan was said to be considered, but not invited.

Thanks for not reading the thread, Hawthorne. It's already been mentioned, and Reid did NOT audition for Led Zeppelin. Reid was asked to be part of the band, but he never auditioned.

Moving along... according to SHF forum member Paul Salley's new book, Jimmy McCulloch auditioned for Jethro Tull, but didn't get the job because Anderson said he was "too young".

At the end of 1968 when Martin Barre joined, I guess. Jimmy was indeed young.
