Nothing in that statement from MGM contradicts what's in the article. Highest grossing, stellar business, holding well...still doesn't mean it turned a profit. And we know studios are the masters of spin.
It's a direct contradiction. MGM's last sentence says it will profit. Standard box office analysis says once you double your production budget in worldwide gross, you will almost always profit in the end with all ancillaries counted.
Very easy to retcon this ending and it won't take a Spider-man multiverse cameo. They literally left the door open for it: Spoiler A trap door
So No Time to Die is officially the biggest movie of 2021. But there are those who doubt it will ever make a profit... 'No Time to Die' to Lose Millions in Theatrical Run - Variety However, the movie cost more than $250 million to produce, at least $100 million to promote and tens of millions more to postpone over 16 months. Insiders say “No Time to Die” needs to make closer to $900 million to break even, a feat that would have been realistic had a global health crisis not entirely upended the theater industry. As a result, the film now stands to lose $100 million in its theatrical run, according to sources close to production. Other industry sources suggest the losses wouldn’t quite reach the nine-figure mark though they would still be substantial.
Unless I'm mistaken, MGM said: "No time to die" will earn a profit. So, despite $730M at the B.O., one would think there's no profit yet, but it will earn it. How much "profit" it's unknown. Of course it could be a $2M profit, so MGM's statement would be correct Blu Ray out in less than 30 days, looks like a region free disc. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Time-James-Bond-Blu-ray-Region/dp/B09GPXXS8N
Best Buy's Steelbook cover is so badly cropped he looks like he's in some kind of helicopter cockpit instead of the Aston Martin. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/no-tim...y-only--best-buy-2021/6483491.p?skuId=6483491
No Time to Die is my favorite movie of 2021. I bought the double LP soundtrack from a local shop today. For the most part, it sounds marvelous, but the second LP is warped, and there are pops on Side D. The Billie Eilish theme song on Side D fares better than the other tracks on that side thankfully, and the Side D in general is certainly not unlistenable, but...geez...how hard is it for newer vinyl manufacturers to do quality control? I've run into so many problematic 180 gram newer records, while my original pressing records from decades ago sound great. I've also got the wonderful Billie Eilish RSD single with the Brit Awards performance version. I'll be grabbing the 4K UHD of No Time to Die on the day of release, but I'm just going to grab the standard edition, because it has the best cover art.
I think I'd have to agree with you. I had high hopes that the Ridley Scott movie or a couple of the MCU movies would be better, but the 007 turned out to be the best. Yes, great soundtrack too, and I'm not even a Billie Eilish fan.
On my 2021 movie list, Villeneuve's Dune is a close second behind No Time to Die. Titane ranks highly on my list as well. It is a universal appeal movie that has everything any viewer could possibly want. Girls, cars, dancing, etc.
Yeah so far No Time To Die is the best movie this year. DUNE would best it if we got Part 2 already but thus far it is incomplete.
If you are around the LA area and like cars and James Bond, they have all the cars, boats, motorcycles, aircraft, ect used in all the Bond films at petersen museum, pretty dam cool!!
I go back and forth over whether or not they do a complete reboot (completely new continuity, supporting actors,, etc)a soft reboot ( keeping some elements and actor castings from the Craig era)or they continue the current continuity with a new lead actor. At this point I'd say the complete reboot is still the most likely outcome given the ending , but I could easily see them keeping some of the support cast actors as was done with the transition of Brosnan to Craig. While it is possible they go with the idea that Bond somehow survived the explosion at the end of NTTD and recast, narratively the Craig era has led to some dead ends given Craig was playing a retired and aging Bond whose career was done. Though, say, Henry Cavill isn't a kid anymore, having late 30s Cavill or similar aged actor taking up the role and going with conceit he's still the same "old dog" wouldn't fly. If they did continue it from NTTD it would probably be vaguely and conveniently ignore the fact that he was retired and done and handwave away the age. They have sort of done that anyway whenever we had switched actors in the past (50 something Roger Moore became 30 something Timothy Dalton) , but it would be a harder pill to swallow this time.
Holding out to see if Licorice Pizza is up to usual PTA standards. I hear Pig and Old Henry are very good too.
1995's GoldenEye prologue took place 9 years before the events of the main film...so 1986; one year after Moore's last film. No big deal then, so, in case, I guess no big deal now.
I guess so, but they made it a big point in this one that Bond was an old guy or the very least at the point his career was done while with Roger Moore's Bond in VTAK they were pretty much ignoring that the guy was aging(although strongly enough they seemed to lean into it in FYEO a few years prior). The only way they could conceivably continue the idea of an older battle worn Bond is perhaps hiring an actor in low end of Craig’s age range (mid 40s) and continue the storyline...but its much more likely they will just at the least soft reboot next movie. Either obliquely reference Bond being believed dead and having him resurface without going into the finer details on the events that lead up to his believed demise...or a flat out fresh start with some bits of the Craig continuity added to the overall loose continuity soup of Bond ala what we had before Craig's era. (I.E. a future film of films could reference events from CR, QOS, Skyfall, Spectre and even NTTD as Easter eggs or a sparse line of dialogue here or there which has pretty much been the par for the course for much of the series history.)
If they go for the "escaped the missiles, survived and had plastic surgery" trick, they could throw some "cellular regeneration" and justify a younger actor. Remember, they're the same people that made Die another day.
True. I just hope that either Ion gets rid of Pervis and Wade or even add someone else to the mix to freshen things up. I do think though that each film is largely a product of whomever directs more than Pervis and Wade. They may give the foundation and the starting point from which the Director and their team build on, but the very fact you can get gold like Casino Royale and Skyfall, and dreck like Die another Day and Spectre all from the same screenplay writers leads me to wonder how much influence they really have on these films. In other words....maybe just get Martin Campbell back for the next one and watch the money roll in....
...and for those that thought that Bond's death was permanent and he was being replaced....well here’s a brief update... James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli says 007 'will be back'
Disappointing that Craig couldn't at least sit and field questions at the Deadline event if Rami Malik was there. Yeah we all know 007 will be back. It just won't be Craig. No need to address what happened in NTtD going forward. The reboot should hit the ground running in the best tradition of James Bond. But first I'm looking forward to rewatching NTtD a couple or three times.
I expect a top presentation on 4K and BD. I haven't seen it on VOD but I was told that the 4K version they're streaming was slightly darker while the "regular" FHD 1080p looked just fine...still 3 weeks before the mailman brings me the disc I preordered.
