I wasn't really a PTA fan for the early films (I hated Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love), but his last few have won me over. Phantom Thread was particularly great, and not just for DDL. I'm familiar with Haim, and Alana looks like another musician/actor who could move on to great things. Many will poo-poo the casting choice, but I find many musical artists (as live performers) to be well suited to acting. I think back to Waits in his early film roles, and how well he fit into them.
Just read that there is a 70mm print for the New York premiere. Hope one of these makes it over the Atlantic!
I understand it's going to play in 70mm at the Fox Village in Westwood...I assume a few other theaters around the country as well!

Interview with the man himself. A couple plot point spoilers. Paul Thomas Anderson on 'Licorice Pizza' and Filmmaking - Variety
Alana Haim is getting massive, pretty much universal praise for her performance, with some folks going as far as saying this is the start of a major film career and even making some Oscar buzz. In fact, here’s a quote from John C. Reilly: “When Paul sent me that first screen test [of Cooper and Alana], I was like, ‘Dude, if you can keep them feeling this free, I think you’ve got a movie,'” Reilly said. “You know the phrase, ‘You can’t take your eyes off her?’ I’ve experienced that feeling before, watching a fireplace or a baby, but rarely with adults. When I visited the set, I remember sitting there and being glued to the monitor, even between takes. I turned to Paul, and I was like, ‘You can’t take your f*****g eyes off [Alana].’ He looked at me like, ‘Right?' “The only other actor who makes me feel that way is Joaquin Phoenix. Watching him is like watching a raccoon rummage through garbage cans. What is he gonna do now? Why look at anything else, while this is going on? It’s hard to keep that energy on camera, Alana. Take it from an old clown like me.” Who’d a thunk it?
Pretty odd mix for a film set around 1975. Only a modest number of songs that would have actually been in the ether (either AM or FM) around that time. And a 1967 version of My Ding a Ling? Not the 1972 hit version?
I heard about this movie on "Fresh Air" (Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Licorice Pizza' is an endearing slice of '70s Hollywood ) over the weekend, it looks great!
You had me at "Alana Haim". She's got...something. Although my first reaction was, "NOOOOO...he didn't really make a film called "Licorice Pizza" about a pizza joint, did he-?!"
I went Sunday evening to the Fox Village in Westwood, close to sold out (1,300 people) and it's a darn good film! The 70mm print was very clean (besides some handling dirt at the reel changes), color-timed well, and looked great. I found Alana and Cooper to be magic on screen, just electrifying together---I can see acting nominations not out of the question for either----but the film does feel about 20 minutes too long (runs 135 minutes) overall. Outside of that, I do recommend the "Licorice Pizza" and will see it again when it goes wide on Christmas day!
The first film of PTA , that I did not like. Way too long , and sleep inducing. The praise Haim is receiving must have been bought. (but if this stops her , from making music, all good)
Has the highest rated score at metacritic Licorice Pizza Also huge scores at rotten tomatoes Licorice Pizza
Looks good I will definitely see it at some point. I really liked Hard 8 - I guess that puts me in the minority. I think Inherent Vice was the only one I didn't dig that much but that's because I was a big fan of the book. Not totally his fault, very hard to adapt imo.
I’m not thrilled with the hype of this movie, that turns me off but I still will try to pencil it in sometime in the next 2 weeks but I still gotta see Spider-Man. Now that movie survived the hype.
