I don't mind his voice, it's the name that trips me up: Biff Byford. That's the least metal name in metal.
Roger Waters-era Pink Floyd, when he muscled in to being lead singer. His voice worked well for some songs, but an album's worth can become grating. By the early 90s, he sounded truly awful.
Talking Heads Dave Matthews Band Van der Graaf Generator Since the OP mentions bands, I can't really include John Lennon, as he's fine in the Beatles except when he starts processing the heck out of his vocals on the psychedelic stuff.
Honestly, I'm a fan but I can't blame you at all. Hammill is definitely an acquired taste, but I appreciate his broader musical/lyrical vision so I've come to accept his vocals. A few people have mentioned Family's Roger Chapman and I can see this too, though I like him. He was capable of singing more conventionally at times, but when he does that bleating vibrato thing, it can get a bit grating. If I enjoy the music enough, I can usually acclimate to unappealing vocals. But I still haven't managed to warm up to the guy from Black Country, New Road, who doesn't so much sing as offer dramatic readings.
I would probably like most of these artists much more than i do if i didn't find their voices so irritating. David Byrne Elvis Costello Richard Thompson Bruce Springsteen John Hiatt Bob Seger Neil Young Lyle Lovett Connor Oberst U2 The Decemberists Fleet Foxes
Pantera. Dimebag was such a brilliant player, the band was really tight, but I can’t stand the singer and his stupid posturing…
Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen? Are you serious? Well, I don’t appreciate Robert Plant‘s voice, I have no reason to be outraged
I like his current voice and music both solo and with Allison Krauss, not a fan of his Zep voice...i've heard he feels the same way.
