Simple..

What movie have you seen the most often?

There's a handful for me: The Godfather, The Ten Commandments, It's A Wonderful Life, Alien...but when it comes down to the nitty gritty the movie zI have watched the most is The Great Escape.

First saw it when I was about ten or so at the theater.
It was so exciting and I was so wrapped up in the story and the characters.

Over the years I have probably seen it in excess of 50 times. If I stumble upon it on TV I am compelled to see it through to the end.

I may even watch it again right now.

I'm pretty sure that the original Star Wars, the original RoboCop, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rock N Roll High School, and Airplane! would be my top five most viewed.

I still have my original worn-out copy of my MR tape. How many times viewed until DVDs came along? Then BluRay?

Countless.

Same with these Chevy Chase ones. Billions of times growing up.

At this point, I can't say how many times I've seen Casino, but odds are it's in the billions.

 

I see you're a Canuck senior citizen like me so I'll assume you've seen ' Lawrence of Arabia' about 50 times or more which means you've spent about about 20 hours of your life watching Omar Shariff approaching that well.

 

Do we count the annual Christmas movie fest? Or my love for Miyazaki Hayao/Studio Ghibli? Or any Buster Keaton silent?

 

Con Air. What can I say? It's always on the tube on one channel or another and I keep stopping to watch it. The Rock is probably a close second, same issue. These are not epically great movies and I am not proud of it. Damn that Nicolas Cage.

I haven't seen it in quite a while, but there was a period in my life where I could pretty much recite the entire film verbatim.

 

In case you don't know, The Great Escape is now on Blu-ray from Criterion, and looks excellent.

I love that scene. There's not a wasted word in that movie. It's also my most-watched and favorite film of all time. Saw it on the big screen when I was 12, and was blown away.

That would be Strangers on a Train or Rear Window.

 

Bladerunner, because I have it on so many different media.

Second place is Bridge on the River Kwai because Alec Guinness's performance is so restrained and enigmatic that I never know for sure what his real motivations were.

 

Many of the usuals are on my list: The Godfather, It's A Wonderful Life, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, etc. But the one that always amps me up whenever it comes on? THE HANGOVER. What can I say?

 

How is it possible that you can own the movie on "so many different media" and not know the title is two words, not one?

There's a scene that bugs me in ' Strangers On A Train'...
I don't remember what it is but somebody drops something down a manhole cover. He has to get it back so he reaches down and with great effort just manages to grasp it in his fingers. It falls away from him and lands another foot or so farther down. Once again he strains and strains and once again manages to grab a hold of it.
Why didn't he just make the extra effort the first time to get a firm grip on it?

 

It’s about the suspense. In the moment most folks aren’t goi g,to question it and Hitch knew it so it largely works. Or as Hitch used to say it was ‘too late because we’ve already got their money”. He knew that spending mkney, setting up the scene and then delivering moments that dazzle will earn good will so folks will forgive the little moments.

Had to think for a bit, then it hit me.

A Christmas Story.

At least once every year since it came out. It’s frequently the “background movie” running continuously on one of them channels (TBS? TNT? Something like that) all Christmas Eve/Christmas day.

There are a whole bunch of others that I’ve watched dozens of times, but I think that Classic Christmas movie is the leader in re-watching.

 

The TV version of Repo Man that I wore out on a VHS tape. "Flip you, melon farmer!"
