Mike McCartney recently said that if his mother had lived there was no way either he or Paul would've gone into music - 'She would have had us in one of the professions. We'd have been doctors'.

Didn’t Paul’s dad want him to finish his exams, so he would have a fallback option? I always thought he would’ve made a great professor of literature or something if music hadn’t worked out.

"In his head and his memories, John was a working-class hero, but of course he wasn't,” Davies wrote. “He was brought up in semi-detached suburbia by Mimi, his aunt, a snob who looked down on snotty-nosed council house kids like Paul and George." - Beatles/Lennon biographer Hunter Davies.

I thought it was more along the lines of, Mum would never have let Paul quit school and go to Hamburg. Maybe that's saying the same thing, ultimately.

Middle class suburbia! Kind of like Sandy Denny's childhood home.

    Anyway
John had hardships while grown up but he was the one beatle who was t brought up in s working-class home. He was(lower)middleclass brought up in a middleclass home.
At least that was my impression while visiting Liverpool and also what people there told me.

No, he wasn't. This is the guy who said being in the Beatles had become too much like a job. That would be most people's dream job.

Do class definitions differ between the US and the UK?

Yes, but only slightly. In the UK the three main classes are
    • the Upper Class. Often people with inherited wealth. ...
    • the Middle Class. The majority of the population of Britain. ...
    • Lower or Working Class. People who are agricultural, mine and factory workers.

He had the most 'middle class' upbringing of all 4 of them, but I'd say his Aunt Mimi wasn't exactly wealthy.

A working class hero is something to pretend to be.

John Lennon though was not most people and I can see how life on the pop merry-go round may have frustrating after he reached the toppermost

Class is class. And that goes for the biases that are inherit in them.

Ok, to me, working class simply means blue collar or doing manual labor. Doesn't seem too different to me. Maybe the US has a larger working class?

It's the social stigma attached to the working class in the UK that's different. See the video posted by Arnold Grove above. Without that, there would have been no reason for Lennon's song.
