No wrong answers…just vote as well as post your favorite 90s albums that deserve way more recognition.

Even though these albums may have gone platinum back in the day, their cultural relevance has fallen by the wayside.

  2. Bruce Hornsby, Hot House

A record I didn't even discover in its entirety until I purchased it about five years ago. It wasn't all that "culturally relevant" then, and isn't all that culturally relevant now. But it deserves to be culturally relevant in the future. One doesn't run across this sort of melodic sophistication every day. But, shock horror, it swings more than it rocks! What radio station could play it, then or now?

I never thought Belly’s King got the attention it deserved. Aside from great songs it’s produced by Glyn Johns.

    I voted for

Angel Dust - Faith No More
If in fact this album has been swept by the wayside of time, that would be a huge disservice... Stunning album

    Come On Feel The Lemonheads
Again, this is a wonderful album, and among my favourites of the nineties.

Welcome to Wherever You Are - INXS
A great album, that never seemed to get its due, as far as I can tell.

    Recovering Satellites - Counting Crows
The band in general seem to be dismissed, but I think they released a lot of good stuff... Among my wife's favourite bands, and so I saw them in concert in 2011? Excellent band, and excellent show

    Dummy - Portishead
To me as good and important as the Massive Attack albums from around the same time. I think the New York concert dvd is excellent too.

For me one band and album that probably really didn't get enough attention at the time, or now, would be
They Might Be Giants - Flood
A really great album, that is quirky and inventive and enjoyable

I'm not very familiar with 90's music since that decade is the cut off point in my musical interests (despite me being born in 1999), and I've never heard a single one on the list here. The few 90's albums I'm familiar with (Wildflowers, We Can't Dance, Nevermind, Spice Girls, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, etc. ) get plenty of recognition for the most part, but I could name a few I partially like that fits the thread topic.

Months ago, I grabbed a CD of Phil Collins' 1996 album Dance Into The Light at Goodwill just for the heck of it, and expecting nothing, I was pleasantly surprised. It has the obligatory ballads everyone complains about, but has some pop songs as well. The title track is a strong opener, and has to be one of the most upbeat songs Phil ever performed. However, there is an even more upbeat song later on the disc that makes the album for me, and is the most underrated Phil Collins song IMO. Wear My Hat sounds just like if Buster Poindexter's Hot Hot Hot was on Paul Simon's Graceland album, and if that's not upbeat I don't know what is.

DITL isn't as good as Phil's 80's albums, but it's much better than that snore fest follow-up Testify, and I'm not sure about Both Sides since I haven't heard it yet. I'll post more albums in this thread later as they come to mind.

There are almost no "overlooked" albums in this poll (maybe Hum?). In fact most of them were strong in sales, popularity, and critical acclaim- so the opposite of "overlooked".

As a big fan of both when they were released, I went for Going Blank Again and Whirlpool. A Northern Soul is far and away my favourite Verve album, plus Last Splash and Come On Feel... are both albums I have loved for nigh on 30 years now. So those. Between 10th & 11th creeps in purely for the weekend spent tripping in Somerset many years ago with that as the partial soundtrack. I guess we also hammered Dummy back in the day. So that too!

An album that tends to be overlooked even by fans that I liked a lot from the 1990s is Watusi by The Wedding Present.

The only one of those I'm interested in is Counting Crows' Recovering The Satellites. I have a couple of their records which are quite good so I might well enjoy this one, too.

An album from the Nineties that is far less well known than it should be is Full Throated Abandon by Canadian folk juggernauts, Tanglefoot. Here's a tune from it:

I voted Dummy and Angel Dust, because they're my favorites from that list.

Man, but in my music universe those are clearly not overlooked.

Now, if you want an overlooked pearl of the 90s here it is. Great music and most people don't know it

Has anyone here heard of Never The Bride? I saw them supporting The Who in 1997. This is from their debut album in 1995:
