Ed Sheeran continues to smash records with chart success after chart success. Sales alone might indicate that he is one of the greatest solo male artists of all time, perhaps exceeding such well known greats as Paul McCartney and Elton John. Perhaps not? Personally, his music hasn't connected with me at all. Yet. What does the consensus of the Hoffman Forum say?
Not my cup of tea but with just an acoustic guitar, his voice, his songs and a bunch of looper pedals, he commanded the main stage at Glastonbury, and had a vast crowd in the palm of his hand. You can’t do that unless you’re really good.
I keep meaning to check out some Ed streams to see what he's about, but don't know when that'll be. I'll report back later.
Agreed on that. You cannot knock the guy for that aspect. I don't get the attraction but plenty do and are very fanatical about him.
I try to stay up at least a little on today's music and I often find lots I enjoy. On the other hand there's lots that does nothing for me. Ed Sheeran falls into the latter. He makes gluten free music, perfect for the lactose intolerant.
He seems like a decent guy and a good person but I wouldn't deliberately spend any time with his music
I did hear Ed once sing a Beatles track but I thought he 'murdered' it. Perhaps this has created bias. Seems like the Hoffman Forum thinks he is mediocre to poor so far in the poll. Not the Best of British then!
I see him on TV and in film and he seems like a really nice, affable, decent, likeable cove. He also has had remarkable achievements such as those mentioned above, in sales, in fans and in captivating crowds, which I note. But … I pop into my niece’s and she’s playing one of his LPs and I get Sheeran-rage.
I think he is a respectable writer… but I can only handle so much of him in one sitting. I’m burnt out on “Shape Of You” and “Perfect,” but when a song like “The A Team” comes on, I’m reminded of why I originally liked him.
Can't bear him. Once had to sit through a whole album in a restaurant and it was so depressing. Totally and utterly dreary and tedious, nothing interesting or original about it at all. No idea what anyone finds enjoyable about him.
Interesting. Perhaps he will come out of the closet as a Canadian with no sense of humour. A cultural chameleon of sorts. The possibilities are endless for musical reinvention. He could be the new Bowie.
I can't remember a single melody of his from any of the songs I've heard. It's like the music just disappears as soon as I hear it. I can't consider him the best anything if he has yet to write a melody I can at least remember enough to hum or turn into an ear worm.
You cant remember the melody to "Galway Girl"?...I find that hard to believe, but maybe you haven't heard it to be fair
I think he falls between the fourth and fifth categories i.e. a mediocre talent unleashed upon a public hoodwinked by hype. There are worse “artists” (well, one comes to mind) who sell even more.
He's the guy who suggested to the other guy in 'Yesterday' that he change the title of ' Hey Jude' to ' Hey Dude'...
