That was my first Hargrove album, discovered first in the CD bin at my local public library. Been a fan ever since!

Now playing: Lee Collins – A Night At The Victory Club (1974, Vinyl) I read Collins' book about New Orleans music and musicians years before I was able to hear any of his music. A contemporary of Armstrong (1901), this is live (in 1951) from the Victory Club his base for most of the '50s, at "644 N. Clark St., near Erie" in Chicago.
Ted Gioia's tribute to Terry Teachout, who died at age 65: https://tedgioia.substack.com/p/a-tribute-to-terry-teachout-1956 Teachout was the author of Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong (2009, HMH Books).
NP: Back to Zoller & the '60s. Zoller, Don Friedman, Barre Phillips and Daniel Humair. Attila Zoller Quartet – The Horizon Beyond (1966, Vinyl)
NP: Booker Ervin two-fer from the '70s with Johnny Coles on one LP, Woody Shaw on the other, Horace Parlan/Kenny Barron, Billy Higgins on both. Booker Ervin – Back From The Gig (1976, Vinyl)
Prestige (Twofer) PR 24016 - Gerry Mulligan / Chet Baker " Mulligan Baker" - compilation rec. 1951 to 1965 - Engineer (remastering): Rudy Van Gelder
I rearranged some vinyl today and pulled out an old Mosaic that I bet I played once - Gerry Mulligan - The Emarcy Sextet Recordings. Playing LP2 now. Nice, if polite Jazz. No fireworks here, which is probably why it got labeled "cool jazz" by the critics of the day. I really never got Mosaic's intention with these covers though. A badly aligned typewriter? Make it look like a boot? X-Files?
These are IMO the Sextet recordings with Brookmeyer & Sims. Highly recommended. Is there an LP list in the booklet? Thanks
NP: I see the Discogs image has a cut corner just like mine... Stan Getz Quartet – Stan Getz Gold ..." Happy 50th Stan" - A Celebration, Live At Montmartre (1978, Vinyl)
Yes. The LPs are as follows: The Gerry Mulligan Sextet (Emarcy MG 36056), Mainstream of Jazz (Emarcy MG 36101), A Profile of Gerry Mulligan (Mercury MG 20453), Mainstream of Jazz Vol. 2 (Mercury 159J-35) and Mainstream of Jazz Vol. 3 (Mercury 159J-36).
Great Info. All vinyls here. So I didnt miss something. This sextet is among my favorite Mulligan groups Thanks.
Teddy Edwards - Good Gravy (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-661-2) I have the house to myself this evening and this is the album that starts it.
Thanks @Tribute So far, the series on Onyx haven't had quite the same appeal (they tend to skew earlier, more reissues/archival) but I enjoy those I have heard all the same. NP: Etta Jones - Hollar! (Prestige Stereo original 1963) First listen. Jones doesn't get the same props as Ella, Billie, et al, but was a wonderful jazz singer. The Prestige albums include strong players too. This copy turns out to be a bit crackly. Bass – George Duvivier (tracks: A2, A4, A5, B2), Michel Mulia (tracks: A1, A3, B1, B3, B4) Drums – Roy Haynes (tracks: A2, A4, A5, B2), Rudy Lawless (tracks: A1, A3, B1, B3, B4) Guitar – Wally Richardson (tracks: A1, A3, B1, B3, B4) Piano – Jim Neeley* (tracks: A1, A3, B1, B3, B4), Richard Wyands (tracks: A2, A4, A5, B2) Tenor Saxophone – Oliver Nelson (tracks: A4, A5) Vibraphone – Lem Winchester (tracks: A2, A4, A5, B2) Vocals – Etta Jones Hope all are enjoying their Friday. Just caught the series finale of The Expanse. Always sad to say goodbye to a favorite TV show. I see the reminder that today is the 20th anniversary of the forum. Happy anniversary. How lucky we are to have this place. I joined a year later but was lurking for the first year. Goodness, that time passed quickly.
NP: Sonny Rollins - More from the Vanguard (Blue Note mono twofer 1975, rec. 1957) First listen, having upgraded a prior copy of the first volume, and compared various versions. Glad to hear more from these sessions. The tan twofers have become something of a compulsive must-buy. Bass – Donald Bailey (3) (tracks: A1), Wilbur Ware (tracks: A2 to D3) Drums – Elvin Jones (tracks: A2 to D3), Pete La Roca (tracks: A1) Tenor Saxophone – Sonny Rollins
Shelly Manne And His Men - At The Black Hawk Vol. 2 (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-637-2) My favorite two volumes of the At The Black Hawk series are volumes 2 & 3 and both include a version of a Benny Golson composition. Volume 2 starts with a sublime take of "Step Lightly"...and just goes on from there. Essential.
Picked up the Modern Harmonic Kevin Gray cut of this one. Terrific. THIS is what I want from Szabo. I wish he would have played straight more on Impulse and did less of the syrupy variety show singers pop songs.
I am just really on a roll of bargain bin hunting... Sandy Owen – Boogie Woogie Rhythm And Blues Label: Ivory Records (4) – IRD9188 Format: CD, Album Country: US Released: 1987 Genre: Jazz
Some folks over in the Tone Poet thread were talking about this record, and like many of you, whenever someone mentions something you haven't heard, you need to listen to it—and often buy it—immediately. Lucky for me, I was already ordering a few things from Japan, and this was the second thing on my turntable since my package arrived. And let me tell you, this is just a home run from the start with the Trio's perfect rendition of Caravan. Shouldn't be surprised with these three, but I admit I was with how good they sounded together.
Thelonious Monk - Misterioso (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-206-2) One of the best live recording from Monk. Johnny Griffin is on fire and Roy Haynes is proving once again he's one of the best. Perfect way to close a perfect evening.
