A contemporary of Armstrong (1901), this is live (in 1951) from the Victory Club his base for most of the '50s, at "644 N. Clark St., near Erie" in Chicago.

I rearranged some vinyl today and pulled out an old Mosaic that I bet I played once - Gerry Mulligan - The Emarcy Sextet Recordings. Playing LP2 now. Nice, if polite Jazz. No fireworks here, which is probably why it got labeled "cool jazz" by the critics of the day. I really never got Mosaic's intention with these covers though. A badly aligned typewriter? Make it look like a boot? X-Files?
These are IMO the Sextet recordings with Brookmeyer & Sims. Highly recommended. Is there an LP list in the booklet? Thanks

(Prestige Stereo original 1963) First listen. Jones doesn't get the same props as Ella, Billie, et al, but was a wonderful jazz singer. The Prestige albums include strong players too. Shelly Manne And His Men - At The Black Hawk Vol. 2 (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-637-2) My favorite two volumes of the At The Black Hawk series are volumes 2 & 3 and both include a version of a Benny Golson composition. Volume 2 starts with a sublime take of "Step Lightly"...and just goes on from there. Essential.
Picked up the Modern Harmonic Kevin Gray cut of this one. Terrific. THIS is what I want from Szabo. I wish he would have played straight more on Impulse and did less of the syrupy variety show singers pop songs.

Some folks over in the Tone Poet thread were talking about this record, and like many of you, whenever someone mentions something you haven't heard, you need to listen to it—and often buy it—immediately. Lucky for me, I was already ordering a few things from Japan, and this was the second thing on my turntable since my package arrived. And let me tell you, this is just a home run from the start with the Trio's perfect rendition of Caravan. Shouldn't be surprised with these three, but I admit I was with how good they sounded together.
Thelonious Monk - Misterioso (Original Jazz Classics OJCCD-206-2) One of the best live recording from Monk. Johnny Griffin is on fire and Roy Haynes is proving once again he's one of the best. Perfect way to close a perfect evening.
