What is it with Discogs sellers? Post your horror stories here...

  1. Only time will tell if it's a string of bad luck. I understand your frustration. Could be each of those sellers have items listed on multiple platforms and they "forget" if it has sold and they forgot to take down the listing.

I've never had so much inventory that I couldn't manage it properly. 'Don't list what you can't easily touch'. It's elemental.

It's kind of insane to "lose" or "misplace" an item for sale.

I rarely deal with Discogs. At least (in my estimation) eBay has an inclination toward the buyer insofar at rectifying transactions such as this.

Discogs in auhtorithy when I am buying from their website.
When i sell, and I do, i grade according to their policies.
Should any dispute arise that's the one the buyer and the seller will have to refer to.

First, I just extrapolated to give emphasis to the concept.
But sincerely tanks for posting it in full because it makes even more sense when in context.
You are probably failing to catch the 'AND' bit part.
The playing assessment is fully part of the grading one should give to the records.
Strange for a medium that you will eventually... play!!! :D

I don't care to comment about the rest, including this line.
You would have more than one right if I I was buying from goldmine. com.
    But I am not.

    Cheers.

I just placed an order on discogs and completely forgot to check the feedback on the seller. They have a 90% rating with over 10,000 transactions. I have a feeling I'm not going to get my item or if I do it's going to be in horrible shape. Kicking myself for not paying attention.

I understand this. Admittedly I did this a few times.
    Reason?
I Didn't want to buy a perfect record.
I don't believe they exist in the first place. I agree with your last statement 100%!
I just wanted to make sure the seller was responsive in case of problems, confirm that what they are selling is indeed what I am looking for and that the condition meets at least a fair EX condition!

Asking 'hey can you confirm condition as per discogs policies', should in my view at least give them second thoughts.
And if they are unsure and decide to 'avoid me... well be my guest.... we are both happy!
I am just sorry if the next buyer expects correct grading and doesn't know it'd be better to ask them first...
Usually for items 50€+ I ask if they play graded (which is alwats no) then ask if they would care to.
    No play no sale.
I am happy with the cd that most likely I already have.

Vinyl market for me is a collector market today, not a music market anymore.

Anyway I am not as picky as I might be coming across.. .
Heck I don't even return warping that does not affect play... to Amazon!
    Amazon I say!!! :)

    Cheers

Places an order early yesterday, new seller but thought I’d give them a chance, check the 6 reviews posted today to see “scammer, doesn’t communicate, etc,” first order on discog a major success lol.

currently trying to purchase a moderately expensive box set, average sale is about $150, highest sale is $225, yet almost every listing is for around $300 (at least in the US, in Europe they are reasonable.) Have tried messaging folks about the prices, point out history of sales, and they just tell me the price is the price. Oh! And one listed at $300 is missing the two CD’s of a 2x cd, 2x lp box set… yet it’s listed as Mint. Hooray internet!

:agree: Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. I think they want us to pay one months worth of their retirement pensions per sale.

What’s up with US sellers?! Consistently 50% higher than European sellers, and sometimes shipping almost as expensive. Worth it to pay for international shipping with people in the US trying to pay their child support with record sales.

Well technically if those other items are mint, then the grading is correct. Missing items are just that, missing. They don't bring the grade of what else is there down.

Messaging people about their pricing is a sure fire way of inviting the inevitable "Go F yourself" I never understand why buyers do this. Do they really think that they will convince the person that their price is too high?

I hate those average prices. They are meaningless to me, but unfortunately buyers, and sellers, have taken to them like they are gospel. So now I do the same.

There are people on there who just list items they don’t really intend to sell but if they hook a rich desperate sucker, so be it.

I don’t know, there’s a store I wanted to order from but he charges $20 for shipping per vinyl no matter how many you order, then puts in the store description “DONT MESSAGE ME ABOUT MY SHIPPING PRICE.” So he knows he’s an a- hole, he just doesn’t care.

I disagree. Sellers forget that an items only worth as much as people are willing to pay. If there’s a 15 year old product, and a long sale history that you can track, and the highest an item has EVER sold at is $200, yet you list something at $350, $400, whatever, you should just do yourself a favor and take your posting down and put that record aside for safe keeping until it’s worth that much. Especially when there are multiple (note European) listings that are for much less than $200 shipped. By listing something at a stupidly high price you’re inviting offers.

I also think grading something that is mint and missing half its content, and hiding it amongst other mint sealed product price wise, is just a predatory tactic hoping someone won’t read the description and will pay full price. But that’s just me.

I had a similar situation happen last year, and I think it was just bad luck on my part. I was trying to get a copy of the remastered Byrds "Farther Along" CD to complete my Byrds collection. The first time I ordered it, I got the case for Farther Along... but it had the CD for Byrdmaniax in it. That seller gave me a refund. THEN, the second time, the seller had just sold it at a record show, and I got yet another refund. Thankfully, the third time I tried, it went smoothly.

I am not kidding or overreacting. I got a vinyl box set from a discogs seller. He actually had pretty good reviews. The Box Set was rated VG+, the description said that the packaging would have some minor issues, but the records would be fine. I know, VG+ isn't mint, but according to the description, it would at least be playable. So I was fine with that.

Except, when it arrived, I wasn't. The records are scratched as hell, deep and wide scratches all over the place. Dusty and dirty is actually a pretty diplomatic way of explaining how bad they looked... I don't even have to play them. Now way my record needle deserves something like this.

    Now, it's getting even worse:

The packaging: the box must have served as a fantastic meal for some mice. It is nibbled everywhere. How do I know they were mice? Well, when I opened the box, mouse droppings were scattered on the floor. What a mess. So this isn't exactly a satisfying purchase, I must say...

Same old story, I received an lp today that was over graded NM but was VG+. I was satisfied after listening, but the worst part is the jacket was clearly over graded. Over half the sellers have over graded the jackets more than the vinyl. So I will not buy another lp on discogs until I received good photos in advance. Has anyone tried this?

Yeah I have. Some sellers reply some do not. The more expensive an lp, the more likely you will get a reply. No guarantee either way though.

When you do message to ask, include your email address (I always forget!) for a faster reply.

If I'm confirming something specific to the submission or a comment they made on the grading, I do add something like "I just want to confirm [detail]. If confirmed, I am 100% committed to buying" I do this because almost all sellers who complain about these requests say the same thing; hardly anyone replies back or follows through with a purchase. So I like to let the know I will.

I appreciate your feedback on this. Standards seemed to have slipped so much. I've always been a strict graders as a seller and never had a problem from a buyer

Well, after getting scammed on my very first Discogs order, first pressing of random access memories, I tried again. This time I received the 2021 repress instead of the 1st pressing. What the fluff… the universe does not want me to own the original pressing I guess

If there's a next time, message the seller. Prepare to be ignored from time to time, but message anyway. If they ignore you, move on to the next seller. You have to ask on Discogs as a lot of sellers will list their item under any submission that works for them because they are lazy POS. Apologies to the sellers who make a genuine mistake of course. :)

I’ve done this more recently, unfortunately this was another one of my newer orders after the initial scam haha. Next time… I asked the seller if he had a true first pressing he could send as replacement, he said no and then asked how I’d like to handle the situation. It was of course shipped internationally, so shipping back is a bit of a lose lose. Do you think it’s fair asking for a full refund? That’s what I did so we shall see..
