Songs like Burn by Deep Purple ?

Doesn’t have to be Deep Purple necessarily, Just a good early 70s rock jam.

 

Burn really is a unique song for it's time (the fast riff, dueling vocals, classical influenced solo section). It may be easier to find bands from a few years later who took the Burn framework to new levels. Iron Maiden tracks like "Aces High" and 'The Trooper" are like the sons of "Burn" IMO.

(produced by Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, incidentally.)

Unique also because the lyrics really lay out a panicked and frightening scenario ... with all that has happened since in the dark lyricism of hard rock, metal, and dark metal... not that I'm a listener to the genre. But I have to say when you listen to the lyrics to this one really kind of fit the music.. hard charging powerful.. everything moving beyond your comprehension. It's not Cannibal Corpse .. but because the narrator isn't a nihilistic observer it actually has some human drama to it!!! Hard to imagine this has often been done better but I'm sure I'm wrong!

This came about from the late`7Os through mid-to-late`8Os but is sort of similar with what Deep Purple did.
Though not necessarily always as heavy as “Burn”

 

There are probably a few tracks from any of those first 3 Blue Oyster Cult albums that wouldn't sound too dissimilar from Deep Purple's 'Burn.'

 

Perhaps "Birds of Prey" by Uriah Heep?

Not particularly Purplish. Nonetheless, an early 70s jam with for some absolute bonkers lead guitar work (especially for 1972).

Good call and by the way, Murasaki is Japanese for purple (not a coincidence).

 

I was coming in to suggest:

The only thing is, BOC was pretty guitar-centric, especially with the solos, whereas Purple gave us the guitar solo/keyboard solo on classics like Burn and Highway Star.

 

I take your point with BOC being more guitar orientated but tracks such as '7 Screaming Diz-Busters' and 'Teen Archer', both taken from their 'Tyranny and Mutation' album are examples of not just Bucks guitar work, both tunes feature Keyboard solos quite prominently.

 

Burn is one of my favorite songs of all time.

I’d put Sabbath’s Looking For Today in the same neighborhood.

Before there was Burn there was Highway Star. And Deep Purple would use a similar form again in the 80s with their song A Gypsy's Kiss.

I feel like "Man on the Silver Mountain" by Rainbow sounds a lot like Burn - era Deep Purple.

Its probably one of my favorite hard rock songs of the early - mid 70's. The playing is great and it's just a really nicely crafted song/riff. Man, Cozy Powell was a great drummer.

 

On the 1st Rainbow record it was Gary Driscoll on drums fyi unless you mean live versions of MOTSM then it was Cozy Powell. RIP for both.
