Well regarding generational bias, at least boomers are recognized for better or worse, Gen X is completely forgotten about. Can't count the number of times things that are squarely Gen X are credited to boomers, a lot of 90s music and tv for instance (for example, Green Day have been referred to as a "Boomer band" even though all three members were born in 1972, pretty much in the middle of Gen X... same with Friends being a "boomer show" even though part of the original marketing of the show was that it was a show for Gen X, being about 20-somethings living on their own at a time when the youngest boomer was 30....) but alas, anyone over 35 is a "boomer" to some people it seems lol

It's OK we prefer to fly under the radar and be left alone anyway. :)

Excepting his 2001 classical album, Joel stopped recording new studio albums altogether in 1993. Yet he continues to sell concert tickets, including his monthly MSG shows, pretty much whenever he feels like it. I say: more power to him.

While I'm a huge REM fan, I never particularly liked "It's the End of the World as We Know It". I just don't care for this 'genre' of pop single, and Billy Joel's version doesn't change my mind.

Yeah, forgotten Boomers indeed. We really needed our own name. The oldest Boomers were born during Truman's presidency right after WWII, and we were born during JFK.

I'm the oldest of two children, so there's even less attachment to the older Boomers for me.

True, but we get a lot of flack for some of the weird stuff the older Boomers did. :D

I work in retail. I can absolutely tell what most peoples' sociopolitical and religious bent is by what they eat, the clothes they wear, their age, their vehicle. Many people wear their politics like a badge of honor, at least where I live.

I saw a meme once that went, “In between every Boomer and Millenial screaming at each other is a Generation X’er who hates them both.” I felt seen. :D

I can't speak toward the ignorance of Green Day by some people, but Gen-X is far from forgotten! Gen-X is credited with the alternative/grunge music scene, being "slackers", having movies focused on their generation like "Pretty In Pink", "Ferris Buller's Day Off", and "The Breakfast Club". They are blamed for the popularization of video games, having a low work ethic, among other things.

The older Baby Boomers? They had Viet Nam, disco, Kennedy, MLK, the Apollo 11 moon landing, The Beatles, and Watergate. Generation X? They had The Gulf War, "Footloose", "Rambo", Ronald Regan and New Wave music. What did we younger Boomers get? Barry Manilow, the Saudi oil embargo, Space Food Sticks, and Jimmy Carter.

    Zeppelin duuuuuuuuude.

    :D

We got to live like that movie Dazed and Confused, and had all those cool 70's songs on the radio when we were kids.

But, yeah, Watergate wasn't exactly Vietnam or the moon landing, but we never had to worry about getting drafted.

I like being a baby Baby Boomer, but I want our own name. :realmad:

It amazes me that I'm 60 now and there is a guy still alive that was president when I was 15.

You think you have it bad? Just when it finally looked like my generation ('78-'83) was gonna be recognized as its own thing (The Oregon Trail Generation, possibly?) TBTB suddenly clamped down and proclaimed that '80 = Gen X and '81 = Millennial sooo yeah, now I get to be a f*cking Millennial. :realmad::biglaugh:

My grandfather was born in 1871 (30 years older than my grandmother), but I can't even imagine having a grandfather born in 1790. That's a trip.

I take it they never met. :D

I was born in 1960 and know what you mean. Some socialists call us “Generation Jones” - as in “keeping up with the Jones.” You can “Google” it. Basically, we’re the late Baby Boomers who came of age during the stagflation 1970s. We didn’t have protests & Vietnam; we had economic decline and gas lines…and no muscle cars

I'm an older Gen-X'er but I was raised by Depression Era Greatest Gen parents - my grandmother and great aunt - and hung around with my Boomer uncles until I was about 12, so I'm probably as Boomer as I am Gen-X. I spent my teenage years listening to The Beatles more than almost any '80s acts apart from maybe Eurythmics and Kate Bush, and spent my 20s listening to Joni Mitchell and David Bowie as much or more than Bjork.

I think there's some truth to the generalizations regarding generations, but we're not really talking about everybody in a certain generation behaving in a certain way. It's more about tendencies that are disproportionately expressed in one generation vs. another due to shared experience.

  21. So it's not just when you were born? I need clarification!!!!!
So....born in 1963. Mom and Dad had nothing. We lived in a Council house (rented) built in the 50's.
One of 6 kids, my eldest brother is 15 years older than me. Earliest musical memories are of hearing The Stones around the house. My next brother was 6 years older than me...so the Glam Rock era of the early 70's was the next thing I remember. Slade, T-Rex, Sweet, Bowie etc are vivid early memories.
As a family my mom an Dad never had a car and we never went on holiday!!!!!
Matter of fact...my first holiday was when my sister and brother in law took us to Newquay in Cornwall in 1977. I was 14 years old then!!!!
We never had a pot to piss in!!!!
All my brothers and sisters left home early and bought their own houses...as it seemed ingrained that's what you had to aim for.
I moved out in 1988 when I was 25 buying my first house with my now ex wife.
Been a Engineer all my working life. Stuck in large factory's building or maintain machinery.
Last 10 years or so have been a rollercoast.
Parents gone, trying to emigrate to NZ twice....marriage down the crapper, and starting dating again in my 50's!!!!!!!!!!!
What am I??? apart from a struggling idiot???
    Boomer or Gen X ??
    :help:

Yes. That's always the answer I use for multiple-choice questions, so don't take it too hard.

But in all seriousness, hang in there, we're a few hours away from the next #1 (a day early, as it's the last of not only 1989 but the '80's).

I'd count you as "old Gen X", or "Boomer/GenX" hybrid, but there simply is some grey area, especially since many "old Gen X-ers" have older siblings who are Baby Boomers. Just as my youngest brother is a "millennial", but of course, we have stuff in common. But he had internet in his teen years, and I definitely did not.

People can identify however they want, I suppose.

Not sure how well this stuff translates into UK culture anyway.

To be honest, I just let astrology decide, if Pluto is in Leo, then I think of you as Baby Boomer, (even though it went into Leo in about 1940, if its in Virgo/Libra, I think of you as Gen X.
