I was 8 for crying out loud, geesh Bobby Every Sunday I'd listen to American Top 40, where I'd first heard it
Domino by Van Morrison was first. Followed by Come And Get It by Badfinger a short time later. Can't remember what I had for dinner last night though.
Yes. I was in sixth grade in September of ‘68 and I asked my mother to pick me up Hey Jude on her way home from work…it was a Friday afternoon. That very 45 hangs framed on my wall.
That was definitely one of my early ones. Knew I wasn't going to get the album. Only so much money to go around; you know how it is. But I had to have this song.
My first 45 was a gift alongside my first record player: The Cleveland Browns' 12 Days of Christmas. My parents made the awful mistake of giving me just the one 45 to play on Christmas day, and it was that. Played it to the point of annoyance for everyone, which took all of probably three spins. This was followed shortly thereafter by Queen's Another One Bites the Dust.
An excellent trio of first singles. My first single was Crocodile Rock by Elton John, which my Nan bought me - presumably for Christmas in 1972. However, I think the first one I actually bought for myself was the following year, when I was seven: I was definitely into Glam Rock at that tender age, as the next couple of singles were by Suzi Quatro and G*ry Gl*tter!
I don't remember -- I could guess it was either Heavy Makes You Happy by the Staple Singers or The Rapper by The Jaggerz, or maybe the Love You Save by the Jackson 5ive. I do remember my first 45 was Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In by the 5th Dimension, but my parents bought it for me.
I see lots of Apples in this thread. Always loved the design on the label! Wish I was old enough to have experienced the era of the ‘45. Growing up, I only bought a couple of singles. I’ll admit that it was Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks’ post-Idol singles, but that’s my only real memory indulging in this format. I was more into buying albums and CD singles were largely over with by 2004/5.
I believe that single was released by the first group Pete Best was in before founding the legendary The Pete Best Combo.
I can't be sure, but it could well have been Mouth & MacNeal with "How Do You Do", which was a worldwide hit in 1971
I remember buying Keds shoes and getting an EP with them, in 1966. Still have it. It has Bob Dylan's Positively 4th Street, Dave Clark Five Anyway You Want It, Bobby Vinton, and the Roy Meriwether Trio. First one I bought 'new' in a store, with my own money, is a bit harder. I think it was Hey Jude... by that group.
Ok, I figured it out. Lady Madonna with picture sleeve, I bought new in early 1968. But I bought used jukebox 45's of Michelle, Paperback Writer and Hello Goodbye at 3 for 1.00 in a big square bin at a dept. store in 1967. I couldn't resist 3 for a dollar. That's what got me started. I probably bought twenty more 45's out of that same bin before my eyes latched onto that Lady Madonna a few months later. Once I bought that 1st picture sleeve, I was hooked.
Don't recall, because my older sister was buying them before me, but I'd guess it was probably one she didn't like so I had to buy myself. Probably Johnny Horton's - Sink the Bismarck.
I can't remember my first single purchase but I do remember my first stolen single. 1967 when I was a young, dumb and broke 13 year old I stole the Airplane's Somebody To Love/White Rabbit single from a grocery store.
