That's probably wrong. I think the actual reason was a lack of new material between Alpha and Astra. Most of 1984 and 1985 was void of new Asia music.
You can't wear out your welcome if you aren't there.

However, if first Asia were to hook up with Freda Payne, I'd consider it.

Would be great to have Bev Bevan's Black Sabbath to open for Bev Bevan's Move.

At least the set list would be more diverse than the reunion tours with Ozzy. Toss in Tony Martin on vocals and they’ll plays to tens of people.

Not sure I agree with that. Asia benefitted greatly from MTV with Asia and Alpha. Either the landscape gets blamed, the management/label gets blamed, or everyone gets blamed. Personally, I don't think Astra is a weak album. "Go," "Rock and Roll Dream," "Voice of America," "Countdown to Zero" and "After the War" had plenty of firepower. That leads us to conclude the album either wasn't fluffy enough or it sounded dated (which I don't agree with) compared to the other bands' as far as listeners went.

    Yes!

I'm sure Glenn Hughes would be up for it. Then you can count on dozens.

The Downes/Payne version played a free show at a nearly abandoned outdoor shopping center in Columbus and they drew less interest than a water fountain.

Asia in Asia had to have damaged the band’s relationship with MTV. That show was a heavily promoted event and you end up with Greg Lake who couldn’t have looked more disinterested than if he had stumbled into an Asia featuring John Payne gig.

That could've gotten them another lease, no doubt. But it might've worked against them, e.g., "Make Rock Not War" and "Beat 'Em Up" on Blue Öyster Cult's Club Ninja.

Mandy would've brought more energy and crunch. Cobra's First Strike is evidence.

To be fair, Greg was doing them a favor. He had next to no time to prep after John walked. He did what he could, which was sing and play bass and crack some smiles.

I am cool enough to own both songs
    "Gypsy Soul" and "Different Worlds"
    on their original CD releases.

None of that stops the music from being worth a listen.

For me, Astra is third best of the first three albums but I still love it dearly. Full of great songs, I reckon.

The only person to play a drum solo I've actually enjoyed. What a showman!

We went the VIP route for an Asia concert some years ago. Not only was Palmer the nicest guy in the world during the Meet & Greet, but what I remember most about the show was the drum solo.

Not to say the rest of the show didn’t have value or wasn’t interesting, but we were in the 5th row, center and his solo grabbed our attention which is not something I say a lot for drum solos.

No, you're right -- it speaks nothing for whether the music is any good -- but I have to wonder why they'd bother touring the US.

Payne is based out of Vegas. I’m sure the rotating cast of characters in his band are all US-based as well, so there’s that. Probably not enough interest/money for Euro dates. They don’t really “tour” per se anyways, just random dates here and there.

You can't have one Asia without John Wetton, much less two.
