What did you enjoy more if you experienced all of them, buying new LPs, cassettes or cds?

I would have to say CDs.

I was born in 1987, so LPs were already on their way out and while cassettes were still around, I came of age in the late 90s-early 00s when CDs were the main format. I still like buying CDs even now. While I do like the LP format and started out with cassettes, my fondest memories were buying and listening to CDs.

I still have all my old vinyl, but I never looked back after CD. Cassettes were huge fun, but no, never again.

CD's are by far the friendliest format of all these. Aside from the horrible packaging of course.

During my youth (mid to late 70's) .. I enjoyed buying LP's & 8 Tracks (could play in car when I got my license). 8 Tracks went away and Vinyl stopped being a main stream media format  (double whammy) .. so I dubbed Vinyl to cassettes (never bought that many pre recorded cassettes). I liked CD's (at first) but the continued high prices of the album releases (80's/90's) & eventual loudness wars turned me off.

Got back into Vinyl during the dollar bin days (early 2000's) and it's been the physical format I enjoy buying the most since. Although I mostly stream these days.

Must be a North America thing, CDs in the UK just had cellophane packaging ... no bother to remove.

That's the way CD's used to be here too. Somewhere along the way came a move to making everything "tamper-proof" which has led to many packages being "open-by-purchaser-proof".

I enjoyed (and still do) purchasing all 3 formats.

There are still a lot of titles that are not readily available on CD.

If I can't find a decent vinyl pressing, then I'll seek out a cassette of the album.

All 3 bring bring back great memories of going to record stores with my dad and looking through new releases and new to me music.

Loved my vinyl collection but man, the scratches I could live without. Back then "needle drop" had a much different and more unpleasant meaning.

New LPs. May sound weird but I loved the way they smelled. I was young.

I mostly buy used media now, mostly CDs.

    I've bought LPs, 45s, reel-to-reel, 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs, SACDs, DVD-As.

    The LP wins. Always did.

Past tense and present tense: LPs. LPs are my go-to home listening. The rest were for car or travel.

I have a huge attachment to cassettes because that is how I started my music collection. I was born in the early 80s so the late 80s/early 90s, when cassettes were at their peak, was when I started getting into music and discovering new artists (albeit through the pop charts).

I still have a crate load of them. Now of course I realised the sound quality is terrible, but I loved the compactness of them, being able to take them with you with a Walkman, making mixtapes with blank tapes, recording off the radio, etc. They were a medium I was "engaged" in. They also retained the A side/B side from the LP too which was great when albums were deliberately conceived as having two sides.

I know the first editions had ropey artwork, but once the medium was in its stride, the cropping sorted itself out and most album cover shoots considered the cassette artwork.

So, I'm one of the 5% that voted above, but it's down to the nostalgia attached and the happy memories of building my collection from very humble beginnings.

6stringer ...because it's the music that matters.

Cassettes were never a thing for me apart from blanks to make my own compilations.

For all the joy that the ease of using CD gave me, the LP meant more. Not just because of the physical product but the early 80's were when I was starting to earn a little money so every purchase was considered and meant more...and it was an LP - or a 45. Let's not forget those.

Now, the main upside of CD for me is cost, especially if its something I'm after for one or two tracks. One other upside was that reissued albums on CD sometimes came with sleeve notes that the record originally didn't have.

For me it has to be LPs. When you have a limited budget finding that rare gem or that one pressing you wanted in the bins always feels like a small victory. Plus, just it being the bigger physical format of the three just gives it an “unfair” advantage. CDs tho are a very close second, I’m usually much less concerned about the version I’m buying, especially because I usually look for music that was originally released on cd and it’s still very easy to find a very early pressing. Conditions also don’t matter that much, superficial scratches don’t really affect playback and the jewel case can be replaced. And honestly, walking away from a store with a dozen used CDs for 10€ also feels amazing. For new stuff I always preorder online so che whatever format I’m buying I wouldn’t even consider it for this poll.

TheRunoutMatrix I'm sticking with you, cause I'm made out of glue.

So, I'm replying to my own comment from April as I re-read this thread, as the other day I was in my basement and realized that I actually do have a cassette player - an ancient Sanyo RD-10 that I had completely forgotten about! I brought it up after dusting the cobwebs off it and am currently listening to some old jam tapes from my band that are from the late 80s.

That looks great! Hope you enjoyed your time with an old friend haha.

I've actually been googling to see if cassette decks are even manufactured anymore... seems a couple of companies still do but they are pretty pricey for what they are.

Nothing better than flicking through the LP racks back in the day and seeing that LP you had wanted for years and never seen before, looking in great shape and with a £5 sticker on. Get that baby home asap.

CDs never, for me, got that rare and stayed mostly in print and then we're pretty easy to find on eBay. Plus if you wanted to listen to something you could stream or download it easily.

But in the 80's it was a case of trying to find it in a shop for the most part. Special trips to London to do the rounds of the specialist shops. Like a treasure hunt. You never knew what that next record in the 'just in' pile would be.

LP's. Never bought a pre-recorded cassette. CD's at the beginning, until I realized my lp's generally sounded better even on my then mid-fi system.

I started buying lp's in the mid 60's in elementary school. Nothing can replace the joy of picking up the new Zappa, Cream, Hendrix, Beatles, etc. You get the idea. Rocking in a chair with the new album playing and optically devouring the cover in my hands has never been beat. OK, sex, but hardly anything else.

  25. LPs definitely. Back in the days of yore when I bought LPs, they were expensive and I had very little money. Any LP I bought was a special event.

I can fairly easily afford CDs now so it isn't so special. Cassettes were only so I could play something in my old car.
