The box set The Rolling Stones Singles 1963-1966 will be released by ABKCO Records on May 20, to mark the 60th anniversary of the peerless rock giants. The limited edition set contains reproductions of the first 18 vinyl 7” singles and EP releases by the Stones as they were originally released by Decca and London Records.

The tracks are all remastered by 12-time Grammy-winning engineer Bob Ludwig, and come with picture sleeve art appropriate to the era, as well as a 32-page booklet with extensive liner notes by journalist Nigel Williamson. This also contains rare photos and ephemera and the release features set of five photo cards and a poster, all housed in a hard-shell box. A companion second vinyl box set in the series, The Rolling Stones Singles 1966-1971, will be released next year.

Is it me or are we getting less and less of a heads up that a box set is on the way. 8 whole days until release...

Darn, I don’t need this but it looks pretty cool.

A few years ago I would have bought this just to … look at it I guess.:D

I just checked Amazon : $179.98, at this point anyway.

I read somewhere it wasn’t out until October the other day, 20 May must be a mistake surely?

I think it is wildly overpriced; but the other key point to me is the extent to which it replicates the sound of the originals. My understanding is that some of the punch and excitement of sixties singles was injected by the mastering engineer so it not on the tape as such.

Can I just mention, I know this set combines UK and US releases but such was the beauty of pop music in the 60’s that from a three year period there are 18 singles and EPs included in this set.

    18 in three years.
I guess I/we got spoiled, because a new release was always right around the corner.

I like everything about this release except the price. Ouch! I have the three CD boxes. They'll have to suffice for me in this lifetime.

I also have the three CD boxes, but I'm in. I'm a nerd... just love this kinda stuff. As long as I can afford it and as long as such items are being released at all, I'll enjoy...

I am sure it will come down in the months ahead, but I do not like feeding the ABKCO troll under the bridge. I don't really think the price is too bad, comes in at around 10 USD per disk. Its just that it never ends from these folks and its always a rehash.

  17. So they couldn’t even spring for new box cover art and re-used the one they came up with in 2004?

I doubt the sound of the original 45s will be replicated. The Chess tracks most likely have been folded down from stereo by Robert Ludwig.

    Who knows, I’m just speculating.

I wonder if it will be in stereo? Do you know what mixes were used for the CD box?

Never got the CD box but I have an old vinyl issue that is the cat's meow. I just wish it was in better condition.

I've been hoping that this year would mark a repressing of the 1964-1969 vinyl box, but I suppose that's not gonna happen. I don't enjoy 7", but this is a beautiful set.... Maybe it'll change my mind.

The CD Singles boxes came right on the heels of the 2002 album remasters. Volumes 1 & 2 were issued in 2004. Volume 3 was 2005. The Singles boxes credit Bob Ludwig with mastering, same as the 2002 albums. The Ludwig albums were mixtures of mono and stereo, whichever source was "better." My guess would be that the singles in the CD boxes were taken directly from the masters Ludwig had just recently done in 2002.
