This description makes it sound like the mother was somehow at fault or lacking. Which I think is not the case, nor the intention of the makers. Fantastic movie though.
I think the filmmakers did partially implicate the mother for her role in the whole horror- and obviously the deranged child. This is what makes the film so difficult for some people- that the lack of love can produce a lack of empathy in some people- which can have disastrous results like in this movie- and in reality as well.
I've found many disturbing movies from 2020 and 2021 so far...never has there been so many movies we haven't liked...I'm not enjoying the constant format...they're all the same...it seems like it's mandatory...I am speaking of myself and my wife...
Eden Lake Eden Lake: the film that frightened me most Nuff said. I'll promise you, it is not a movie you want to see and relive again. Unless you like this sort of thing. It is very very disturbing.
"There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do." Terry Pratchett, Small Gods (Discworld, #13)
The fight between Ash and Ripley in Alien, from the white sweat drop rolling down Ash's face all the way to the oral rape with the magazine.
One of the most disturbing films is Peeping Tom. This film is radical and destroyed the career and reputation (at the time) of Michael Powell. Peeping Tom is extremely unpleasant and disturbing.
One of the most disturbing movies I ever saw was a 1971 British film called "Family Life". There is no on-screen physical violence, the violence is all psychological, inflicted on the main protagonist by her family. What makes this film chilling is that (a) the sequence of events seems perfectly believable, and (b) the girl, the main character, is basically driven mad by people who apparently do not actually wish her harm. The feeling that it could happen to you, me, or anybody, makes it much more disturbing than an escapist horror flick.
I remember when I watched it with my then wife. It absolutely terrified her and she couldn't watch it all. Females will view the film entirely differently to men.
I have always been surprised it actually got passed uncut by the board of censors. Its one of the most violent and vilest films ever made. It's extreme, even by today's standards. But in 1960!!
I won't watch it anymore. I have it on bluray. I haven't watched for a long time. It's unpleasant to say the least. I can't imagine what possessed Michael Powell to make it.
