She made that role stick, she made that character stick, and she made that woman's place on a starship full of futuristic, testosterone-juiced male role models stick. That's one helluva heavy lift.

And the grace in which she accepted her part in the trajectory of the rights struggles that followed, was quite an ask, but she took Dr. King at his word. She could have just kept her head down, done the gig and taken the SAG-AFTRA card, gratefully. Instead, she proudly bore that role-model designation on her shoulders the rest of her life, and whether you or I noticed it in our own lives...she made a difference.

Maybe I’m going to watch the original „Star Trek“ series once again this summer.

My favourite 'Star Trek' episode with her was the one where Kirk, Bones, Scotty and Uhura found themselves in a parallel universe and they wound up on a very different Enterprise.
It gave her a chance to stretch out a bit.

RIP The crew is getting back together somewhere. Let’s hope they have wait to a while for the Captain and the rest.

:agree: Yes, "Mirror, Mirror" was definitely one of the very best episodes. Of course, Nichelle Nichols was great in all her Star Trek appearances both on the original show and for those later films.

Sad news, indeed. RIP, Nichelle Nichols, and thank you for the memories.

I found out about her passing just a bit ago, and immediately had a heavy heart. She was absolutely indispensable to Star Trek, which I have watched from the very beginning. I loved her poise, her elegance, her spirit. So wishing her family peace and comfort. Oh what a beautiful angel she must be.

She considered quitting 'Star Trek' but was talked out of it by Martin Luther King Jr.

I have loved this woman since I was ten. I know her place in history. Not just as a true icon and inspiration, but as a lovely singer and dancer. Duke Ellington did not bring on mediocre people.

I watched this a couple of weeks ago, it covers her career well

When auditioned for Star Trek, the producers did not have any sample scenes written for Uhura, so she acted out a scene as Spock:
