Richard Wagner, 1871. By then, photography was advanced enough to produce excellent image ...

RCA Victor Red Seal LM-1987, issued 1956. I couldn't find any discographical information about this record, but the very next LP in the catalog sequence, LM-1988, has one side of recordings Oistrakh made with Munch and the Boston Symphony on 12/14/55. Oistrakh was in the U.S. for his first American tour and it seems reasonable to think this LP was recorded around the same time. The recordings with orchestra were eventually issued in stereo, but I couldn't find a stereo release of this LP.

Kurt Sanderling was an excellent conductor. I have been trying to seek out more of his recordings for my library.

  15. For the sonics (I can't compare or really judge the piece), I think this below is another showcase quality vinyl record (recording-mastering-pressing) from the peak of the analog era.

Don't you get a thrill out of those little QC check-cards - I think this is what they are - which some companies used to slip inside the cover, with the signature of the person who put his/her neck on the line that you were getting a good record?...

I am excited by the soon to be released (by Australian Eloquence) Gina Bachauer Mercury Masters box:

I love Ms. Bachauer's playing and I feel that she deserves to be more widely known and discussed. I am gratified to see her get a tribute box.

A few discs found in the second hand bookshop of a National Trust property while on holiday, 50p each.

Always intriguing to find Supraphon and Mercury discs in the wild, and Dorati is always welcome. Copland, Bruch and Janacek are all new composers for me. I already have a very fine Má Vlast by Kuchar/Janacek Philharmonia, but I’ve heard good things about this recording.

The house and gardens were lovely too - Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk.

More from the thrift store on Sunday. I've never heard this "original version" before. The orchestration is quite different. Excellent sound quality on this one.

I am a Maria Callas fan too. This is a CD I have from early in her career.

I like opera but, to use a sports analogy, I think opera is like soccer - if it’s not being performed at the highest level, it’s not very interesting.
To continue with my sports talk, opera singers are like baseball pitchers - early in their career, their fastball (or their high notes) is powerful and world beating. But later in their career, they have to rely on guile.
And Maria Callas, like Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander, had lots of guile.

On the turntable: This isn't classical. I'll post it over in jazz as well, but it was among the things I picked up at the thrift store over the weekend. With a title like that, who could resist??
