I'll post my full list now, just so I don't misplace it...but I'll just comment on the first five (at least to begin with). I tried to put them in order, though it's obviously somewhat fluid, especially in the second half or so. I feel like I've just scratched the surface, leaving off so many of my beloved albums. I could easily add another 100, without even getting into jazz or classical favorites! 1. King Crimson, Red (1974): A dark, brooding masterpiece that almost feels beyond description to me. Rock, jazz, classical, and avant-garde fuse together in a way that creates an entirely new world and a real emotional catharsis for me. I don't revisit it often these days, but when I do, it loses none of its power 2. Joe Jackson, Night and Day (1982): An endlessly inventive, cinematic pop statement that was the first album (and song) that drew me fully into popular music as a young teenager. Blending latin percussion with brilliant piano playing, nostalgic atmospherics, and accomplished (yet sometimes quirky to the point of unsettling) vocals, lyrics, and pop hooks, it is my favorite album of the '80s. 3. Talk Talk, Spirit of Eden (1988): Is this a rock album? A pop album? I'm not sure how to classify it, but it takes me on an expansive and very emotional journey with every listen. It still sounds like music of the future to me. 4.Kate Bush, The Sensual World (1989): Kind of as the title suggests, this is a beautiful and richly musical experience. While I love her previous album almost as much, this one feels even more intimate and magical in its distinctly nocturnal sound world. 5. Genesis, A Trick of the Tail (1976): How can a single album combine such jaw dropping instrumental virtuosity with such warmly nostalgic atmospherics and songcraft? As with each of the albums above, this seems to create its own musical world that simultaneously suggests past, present, and future. 6. UK (1978) 7. Joe Jackson, Big World (1986) 8. Kate Bush, Hounds of Love (1985) 9. Roxy Music, Avalon (1982) 10. Crowded House, Temple of Low Men (1988) 11. Love, Forever Changes (1967) 12. Steve Winwood, Talking Back to the Night (1982) 13. Harder and more time consuming than I thought it would be - And I didn't even look at my Hi-Res Downloads. But, these are the ones, between my LPs and CDs that I actually listen to the most.
