I last did this in 2016, and posted the results online. They're still there, but in 6 years quite a bit has changed (driven mainly by getting a totally new system set-up and changing my listening habits). EG.
I was the same for me with Yes, much of their songs I first heard live (Yessongs,) and then when I did hear the studio versions I was underwhelmed. Even though the sound quality was not as good.

I have ended up with 205 at this point. The first thing I can think of doing is to limit any artist or band to a single album selection. This will eliminate a lot of great albums but I'm marching downward to 100. Having just finished the second go around I am down to 150 albums. Next, I have decided to focus on Pop&Rock and Blues eliminating Jazz albums even though Jazz is a large part of my musical life. That has brought me down to 122 albums left on my list. Now for the final edits to get to 100. And there are my 100 for better or worse...
Alright, here goes. These are in no particular order, basically just the order they occur to me. I would have a really hard time ordering them in any case. And this is hardly my eternal top 100, but it's definitely 100 of my top 200 or so. Probably ~60 of these would always be in my top 100 no matter when I made it, the other 40 are floating selections... 1. The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet 2. The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed 3. Just checked my latest list in my folders, and there 22 changes. So I may post this up here later. EG.
Yes. Mine is currently: 60s: 11; 70s: 50; 80s: 6; 90s: 17; 00s: 10; and 10s: 6 And I’ve found that I’m actively (secretly?!) delighted when I cut a 70s album from The Rolls. Sometimes, though, I’ve cut a 70s and added a 60s! Which isn’t the direction I want to go. (As you can see, as of now, 61% of my choices are 60s-70s. I’d like to see it below 50%. But ! Great is great.) edit: I’ve also realized there’s albums I’d place on the list (such as Carole King ‘Tapestry’) if the point was to be objective (rather than a “personal” list). But my list is strictly personal; a list of albums that hold up for me. And, quite frankly, I’d say 70 or so are solid. 30 might change at any moment.

Glad to see Lonesome Bob get some love. Caught him live in the basement of a Nashville pizza place in 1997 playing songs from his first album Things Fall Apart (a great collection). Allison Moorer was doing the backing vocals for that show, too. Like Things Change, too.

I left off stuff that made me grind my teeth.... Unless requested I'll ignore the second half of the alphabet. Kudos to the folks who can find a way to pare it down.

Wow. Surprised to see the Loggins and Messina album. It is the one album of theirs I loved and listened to a great deal. Have not played it in years. but need to do so. Audio Fidelity did three of their albums and I was hoping they would eventually get around to Motherlode. You listed a number of albums I have loved through the years that probably won't turn up on too many lists. Great stuff.
Impossible (maybe I do current top 100 favourites later) One album I have come to realise is a a pop masterpiece though, is Taylor Swift’s Fearless (2008) Popular among fans and Grammy awarded I figure for a regular Indie/alternative/rock fan it may pass unrecognised. (Beware that the Platinum edition of this album starts with six bonus tracks which destroys the flow. The album should start with Fearless and end with Change. 5/5
Wow, every one of those is a favorite of mine too! But I will have to check out Mike Marshall, have not heard him yet.
I did the self-imposed 5 album limit, too (but got creative! Neil Young and Neil Young and Crazy Horse aren’t the same thing, eh?). I think the key is to now save your preliminary list so that you have a base to work with. In my case, yeah, my first go had way more than 100…but then I worked my way down and began to trim as I sharpened the ‘ol knives. And I didn’t do this at first, but now I keep track of the albums I booted in order to make room for something I’ve overlooked. I reserve the right to put it right back onto the list whenever I want (as long as I cut to make room). edit: and I don’t combine jazz onto my rock list. That saves at least ten slots, right there.
The jazz and rock thing is interesting... I can't do it though, if I had to start breaking down genres it would take me 7 years lol... I'd be arguing with myself ... does Mahavishnu Orchestra and Bitches Brew go in the rock? Is Breezin going in the Jazz, Pop, R&B or Rock albums?... sounds like a living nightmare to me
