I've been a member of eBay for 18 years, have thousands of transactions and 100% positive feedback.

Because I haven't sold anything in a while they are now holding my funds until the seller acknowledges receipt of an item I already shipped! It's only a $70 item.

I contacted them and oh yes, that is our policy, we are following it.

Moral of the story: don't sell on eBay.

I recently started selling on there only to realize they will hold the funds for two and a half weeks. I sold several vintage embossed bricks, very heavy. I'm broke so I had to borrow money just to cover the shipping. Very inconvenient.

PayPal's doing the same thing: I bought an old Sherwood FM tube tuner and had to call them up to get them to release the funds.

  5. There are many things eBay is doing that make very little sense. They don't give much consideration to the sellers position either.

The ability to commit fraud against the seller has basically been opened and there seems to be no recourse if you are the seller who gets cheated.

    My current mentality about eBay is this;
They are 100% vested in keeping their hands on the money, and everything else is secondary, or further down the list....regardless of what they say.

I have two friends who went through a very dubious transaction issue that included the purchaser claiming they did not receive the goods.
Seller has video of the packaging process (items were $$$ so they took precautions against damage during shipping)
Seller has shipping info that includes all portions of the pickup and delivery process.
Seller has delivery verification to a specific location on the property in question the buyer provided.

Buyer claims they never received said items...and that is it.

Seller is out the shipping costs, as well as having had the purchase transaction reversed by eBay/PayPal based only on the purchasers claim of non-delivery.
Seller has lost everything, initial product, expense of the shipping process, everything, and there is zero concern for the sellers proof, verification, or other such things.

Buyer simply said "I did not receive" and that was that......This makes no sense at all and showcases where eBay stands when it comes to fraud and actually getting to the bottom of things.

Well thanks to this thread I'll file my thoughts, "maybe I should move my CD's for sale to eBay in hopes of moving them?", in the trash where they belong. Fortunately I've never had a phony I never received it claim so far both here and on Discogs.

They will eventually stop holding funds after a few transactions.

This is not true. If a seller has proof of delivery, and they added the tracking to the transaction, they prevail. Feebay is not ideal, but these second hand interpretations are flawed.

If you buy the postage on ebay, they let you take the $$ out of the item's sold funds.

I asked the rep to flip through my history, I sold maybe 1000 things on eBay when I was cleaning out a tractor trailer load's worth of motorcycle parts and then there's guitars and stereo stuff and you name it.
I have 100% positive feedback, there was never an issue as a buyer or as a seller.
Eighteen years and now they're holding $67 less postage and their fees.
I don't have to go to eBay to get treated like that, I can be treated shabbily anywhere!

There are exceptions to everything. There is no way someone who isn't a seller can paraphrase second hand information as truth. There are too many details in even one sale to make such blanket statements.

Paypal withheld your $$ as a buyer of something? That's new.

I don't use it much anymore because ebay stopped using it. I definitely miss the old system as a seller. You could buy shipping materials (not just postage) out of the funds because the payment was immediate. Now I have a 3 day handling time because I don't like shipping before the money is in my bank account. So with all their talk about fast shipping being so important a few years ago, now it's slower because they give me the money slower.

The Pal is still good to use for ebay purchases. Gives you an extra level of protection if something goes wrong. US sellers are forced to use ebay's payment system, not sure about Canada.

Not sure as I don’t sell there anymore…fees and shipping in Canada make it mostly uneconomical.

Same deal in Canada. I think they rolled it out to most countries now. PayPal is still available to use for buyers, though the transaction appears in your account as a payment to eBay. There are no other details like before ie seller details, item purchased.

PayPal will be removed as a payment option I think in 2023. After that everyone will need to pay via eBays payment system.

Really? Hadn't heard that. Ebay allows lots of different systems for payments, not sure why they would eliminate one since easy buying is what they care about.

When I started back after the worst of the pandemic, they held my funds briefly. 16 year seller, most of us know how bad they suck, read any old thread. It's not because of issues, it's because they can.

I think eBay had some sort of sweetheart agreement with PayPal that went south a few years back.
I was surprised when the seller of that tuner (purchased on audiokarma) wrote me and asked to have the payment released by PayPal, I thought it was a done deal as soon as I sent the money.
He said they always do that to him - weird.

I've been buying and selling on eBay since 1999. eBay basically replaced the buying and trading I had been doing at used record stores since I was a teen. Always just my inveterate collecting and pruning of the record collection.

A couple of weeks ago I sold my Chicago Quadio box set on eBay. The original issue had a few mono tracks on Chicago II and IX. I received corrected versions from Rhino, tested them to confirm they were stereo, put them in the box and removed the mono versions. After selling the Quadio box on eBay, the buyer claimed II and IX had mono tracks, requested a refund, sent the box back with II & IX discs with mono tracks (meaning the buyer switched them). Now I have a degraded value box set and I have no recourse. eBay long ago eliminated ability to leave a negative rating for buyer. All one can do is block a buyer.

  22. That stinks on ice.
Kinda makes you think about a car trip to the buyers destination....and then cooler heads prevail, you stay home, note the poop head buyer, and chalk it up to a learning experience.
I really don't know what can be done to thwart cheats like this either, otherwise I would make a suggestion.
I have been cheated by the switch and lie types in the past too and as the owner/seller of the items you are almost 100% stuck with the burden of proof concerning your specific item.

Say you had marked each LP in the set with specific identifiers (self scribed code in the dead wax for instance) and taken the time to have authorities attain and inspect the LP's for your specific identifiers, and those specific identifiers were found....then, and only then, would you be likely to make a legal claim that would stick.
Outside of that long shot you are simply left trying to identify an item that is indistinguishable from other similar items, leaving you with no hard proof that item was the item in question....it is just another similar item.

Unless you are talking about rather large sums of money I suspect the vast majority of eBay sellers will not be undertaking such a self protection system because it is just not worth the trouble and expense.

Absolutely. Despite being a member there forever, I suddenly can't list items for sale as I cant even register for their "Payoneer" thing from here in Japan as the proof of address utility bills they require are all in - you guessed it - the Japanese language. Invalid.

I wonder if they'll do a u-turn as you have to wonder how things are going financially for them compared to their heyday of 15, 20 years ago...

There is a difference between selling and buying in the US. You have to use ebay's in-house payment system to sell, period. To buy you can still use paypal. I know nothing about signing up to sell in Japan, but I've never shown a utility bill to ebay as a listing/selling requirement. If I really wanted to sell in Japan, I would definitely call them and inquire about that.

Sadly, I don't think they will do a u-turn, as the seller is now the biggest product on ebay. They use algorithms to bury listings so you will pay extra fees to promote them. That's just one of many tactics.
