You surely can't mean the "soulful, Steve Winwood-esque" voice that Mark Hollis uses on The Colour of Spring and later albums.
I don't know who you're quoting but yes. Perhaps I should give them another try, but previously struck me as wobbly and over affected
(Twitch-era) Ministry Al Jourgensen was trying out different vocal styles like hats early in the band's career. I don't mind the faux-British accent of With Sympathy, and I came on board with the distortion voice of the early "industrial/metal" years, but the whisper/speak vocals of Twitch is really weird in that I can't fully enjoy the music.
I'm a huge King Crimson fan, dating back to the mid-70s. But I never warmed to Adrian Belew as a front man. For example, I much prefer the instrumentals on Discipline. His vocals on that album are obvious David Byrne impersonations.
Some of the later songs from the Band where Robbie Robertson tried to sing. Someone should have told him he can't sing at all above a whisper i wonder if the rumor is true that he's not really singing in The Last Waltz, that they turned his mic off
It's kinda part of the package with those post punk bands. Just like PIL or The Fall, I can't imagine anyone liking them regardless of the vocalists, if they weren't into that kind of music. And without those particular vocalists they wouldn't be who they are. Voivod is one I just thought of. Interesting Metal band, but IMO the vocals are just weak.
Different strokes yet again (guess that's all this thread is!). Snake's voice always struck me as a key ingredient in the Voivod stew. His melodic, punkish whine for me gives the songs an edge--sometimes cold and robotic, sometimes angry and nihilistic--that perfectly complements the music. Wouldn't want them to have a conventionally good or "strong" singer.
Bowie. He has a number of songs that I like, but I don't have much by him as I can't stand his voice. I have Heroes and Low as I really like the instrumental tracks on those albums. They're all I listen to on those albums.
Among more recent bands: the stoned mumbling that passes for vocals in Dry Cleaning gets in the way of some interesting things happening musically. Maybe I’ll get used to it.
There are a few. Rush comes to mind immediately. I might be inclined to further research into Dylan's discography if I liked his voice better.
You are nuts , the only album where his voice wasn't any good ( this will upset loads of people , but we are being honest now) is Blackstar as he was dying !
