Off to NYC (Manhattan) on Saturday and need some good recommendations to buy some vinyl. Please, & respectfully, not where you frequented years ago, unless it’s still open!
    Cheers.

You didn’t say what you are interested in, vinyl, CDs? Rock, pop, jazz, show tunes, punk, etc.,? Where are you staying?

Generation Records in the West Village, and there are others nearby - I don't know them, but I've passed them. It's a great area to hang out in general so you can get a good meal there.

    Academy Records, multiple locations.
Jazz Record Center, W 26th, can walk there from Times Square, it's a cool place that isn't so well known.
Record Runner and Generation Records, both in West Village, Generation is better.
If you have the time, hop on a train to Princeton, NJ and visit the Princeton Record Exchange.

  9. Don't skip Brooklyn... Academy, Earwax, and the Record Grouch are all worth a start...

And it appears that Rough Trade has opened near where you are staying.

Let us NYers know where you end up visiting and what you pick up. Last time I went to the Jazz Record Center I grabbed a couple of Blue Note Tone Poet series (Wayne Shorter The All Seeing Eye and Speak No Evil), and one of those Japanese Verve Classic reissues of Bud Powell's Piano Interpretations.

Well just picked up the one, Chet Baker New York (had to be!) craft recordings from Generation Records,
To be honest I felt like walking out with nothing. I spoke with two staff who were unhelpful and really couldn’t be bothered with me. I’ll stick withUK stores!

since I still buy and listen to CD's- curious which of those stores still have a decent CD stock left (new and used)

academy on 18th St had a decent jazz cd collection the last time I was there about 5 months ago (and i scored the miles box 'silent way' there about a year ago)

Yeah Generation isn't really a great shop in terms of customer service... More of a grungy hang out. But I like going there to dig around. Too bad you missed the Jazz Record Center! Safe travels..

I visited ‘Jazz Record Center‘ this morning before leaving for JFK.
Walked past it twice until my wife realised it was not a ‘normal’ shop front! What a great place but I should have done my homework of what to look for, too much choice for a relative ‘newbie’ like me!
Next visit to NY I’ll spend a morning in there.

Plan for at least three or four hours if you want to do it right.

I don't think I've ever walked out of the Jazz Record Center having spent less than three hundred bucks.

  22. Can any NYC residents point me to the best store in NYC for selling records?

Looking to unload some and just don't want to deal with lowballers

That could be a tough one. Try calling the Academy Records in Manhattan, but they might only be buying certain genres.

If you have the time and ability to get there, Princeton Record Exchange is probably the best in the area.
