It’s been years since I’ve heard the 1984 version of Mack. Can’t seem to find a version on YouTube. Lots of concert versions and the re-recording. But not the original studio.
From the (closed) thread, Sinatra's Mack The Knife: Unfortunately, the YouTube video was blocked subsequently by UMG; later released on DVD: Frank Sinatra - Portrait Of An Album / Sinatra Sings - Discogs This is the lone CD release (24-track EU version only): Frank Sinatra - Best Of The Best - Discogs
yes Sinatra perfected his delivery in live concerts! Yet the overdub performance doesn’t really work for me personally, because the instrumental track has a too slower tempo compared to what we are used to from the live performances. So I prefer the original version to the overdub.
Unfortunately, for reasons I fail to understand -- simple mistake? damaged source? -- the DVD is in mono. The VHS and Laserdisc are stereo.
[ Repost from (closed) thread, Sinatra's Mack The Knife ] According to one source, there exist at least 528 taped Sinatra performances of "Mack the Knife" known to collectors, from 1984–94. If I haven't missed any, these are the ones available on official commercial releases: 04/1984 Qwest studio recording † 09/1984 Royal Albert Hall [London box set] 04/1985 Budokan Hall, Tokyo [Sinatra in Japan DVD] 03/1986 East Rutherford, NJ [Live at the Meadowlands] 10/1986 Qwest studio vocal overdub ‡ 12/1986 Golden Nugget [Live from Las Vegas] 04/1987 Golden Nugget [Vegas box set] 11/1988 Fox Theater, Detroit [The Ultimate Event VHS] 06/1990 Radio City Music Hall [New York box set] 1993–94? Capitol studio and 1988 Detroit live recording (overdubbed with Jimmy Buffett) [Duets II] † Single, L.A. Is My Lady LP, Portrait of an Album VHS/DVD, Best of the Best (ex-US) CD ‡ L.A. Is My Lady CD, Reprise Collection, Complete Reprise Studio Recordings, other CDs
Two more live “Mack” versions since that 2015 post (courtesy of Andrew Trager): • 10/1987 Reunion Arena, Dallas [Standing Room Only box set] • 03/1991 National Tennis Arena, Melbourne [The Final Concert VHS (Australia)]
Obviously, US Amazon does not have the new vinyl edition available. Their product page now features delivery by ImportCDs—at a much lower price, but not free Prime shipping. Even lower price and shipping can be had direct from that seller: Frank Sinatra Collected - Limited Gatefold, Gold Colored 180-Gram Vinyl [Import] Limited Edition, Gatefold LP Jacket, 180 Gram Vinyl, Colored Vinyl on ImportCDs
Discogs is now showing images of the 2LP gatefold jacket and records: Frank Sinatra – Collected (2022, Gold, 180 Gram, Vinyl) - Discogs
Love that Impex Records release. I never thought Sing and Dance could have such presence. has another remastering come out since?
I worded that poorly. I meant a remastering of another Sinatra record. What's new since Sing and Dance?
I think high-quality and deluxe treatments are pretty thin for Sinatra. I was really into the MoFi SACDs they were doing before the UMe takeover. There's always a chance they could (and should) revisit that line. If MFSL were to suddenly announce a slew of new SACDs, I'd be selling the wedding china. And perhaps most of all, only a handful albums got any love in the hi-res market. The Reprise era feels especially lacking. And let's not forget the awesome Impex SACD of the Columbia era gem, Swing And Dance! Never saw that coming. The Columbia era definitely could use a refresh. I would love another box of radio broadcasts, if they have them. A Voice On Air was incredible. And live sets are always welcome.
You know, I have to say: I’m happy with my Walsh CDs. I grew up on them and I think they sound like Sinatra to me. Smooth, warm, clear and only a little old. I have the Reprise “suitcase.” Except for Watertown (which I replaced with the recent remix), most of the tracks on that box sound pretty good. i agree with you that I’d put money down for say, a mono box. Or a genuine, dedicated audiophile effort to remaster the Capitol discs. But I’m willing to hedge my bets with the work Larry Walsh did at a time when there was a market for high quality CDs on the mass market. ***of course we’re in desperate need of dry mixes of Small Hours, Close To You, Young Lovers etc
I am sorry, but now as I found more time to check out the details of the new CD set, I have to correct myself with respect to what I stated before. Fact is that most of the tracks were newly remastered, but there are also some tracks which were either already remastered in former years, e.g. Time After Time, Mr. Success, or which were not remastered at all, e.g. Witchcraft, All Of Me, Love And Marriage. And secondly, the pictures inside of the CD set only show picture sleeves of EP's and Singles.
So finally. according to the CD’s tracklists, these are the only songs that were remastered: Angel Eyes April In Paris Autumn In New York I Get A Kick Out Of You I’m Walking Behind You Mood Indigo My Funny Valentine Night And Day Ol’ Mac Donald The Lady Is A Tramp Try A Little Tenderness. Furthermore, according to the CD’s tracklists, these are the songs that were remastered in former years: All The Way in 2006 Blue Moon in 1998 Come Fly With Me in 1998 Jeepers Creepers in 1998 Mr. Success in 2001 My Blue Heaven in 1998 Three Coins In A Fountain in 1996 Time After Time in 2006 You Make Me Feel So Young in 1998. Bewitched in 2008 The Way You Look Tonight in 2008. My ears tell me a somewhat different story. But they may be wrong ….
Where are you finding these, Grumpy? In the booklet for the Collected 3CD set, the only dates I see are RELEASE years. Those are shown after the ℗ phonogram symbol which is usually used to indicate a MASTERING date—but not in this track listing. (There are a couple of glaring mistakes, but for the most part, the listed years are those of the original single and/or album issues.) I can find no mastering details for the individual tracks.
As a non-native -speaker I am at a lack of the correct words. What I meant is the information you get when you 'read out' the CD's (inner) track list. As I said, I do not believe that this information is correct. To my ears most, if not all, tracks seem to have been newly mastered.
I guess we have a language problem. I don’t know what is meant by “read out” or “(inner) track list.”
I'm going to jump in and hazard a guess that he's referring to the information displayed by the software being used to listen to the CD. [Edit: Metadata seems to be the word for which I'm searching]
