Recently watched the PBS documentary on Emmett Till. It was horrible what was done to that young man, he was only 14 years old. His death was the spark that led to the Civil Rights movement.
Really enjoyed this new documentary about The Cavern Club in Liverpool, fascinating history outside The Beatles. Link: Watch The Cavern Club: The Beat Goes On | Prime Video
Just got done with Welcome to Wrexham. Gotta say, it kept me interested throughout and if they come out with a 2nd season, I'm in!
The hamlet syndrome, a film about Ukrainian soldiers, incredibly timely and moving. I saw it as part of the docNYC film festival, which is still going on until November 27 I think. You can buy a streaming ticket at home if you’re within the United States and check it out.. THE HAMLET SYNDROME (SYNDROM HAMLETA) - DOC NYC
Harlem Globetrotters History DVD Warner Bros. movie. In the hundreds of DVD's I've watched this is the only one ever to not play the movie but if you click the "extras" it plays......and I really wanted to watch it.
The Prize, streaming on Prime--really great documentary about the history of the oil industry and its impact.
Thanks to a heads up on this forum last night I watched the first half of Taken Hostage on PBS. Fantastic and as good as it gets. Looking very forward to the second half. Also watched Sisters With Transistors last week. Enjoyed that a lot too. Highly recommend both.
First, a shout out to The Automat - a wonderful documentary about a lost piece of urban history, warmly remembered by Mel Brooks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Colin Powell. Best laugh of the film comes not from Brooks, but the late Gen. Powell who throws a little good natured shade Mel's way. Shifting gears, the most recent doc I'm watching is PBS' excellent two-part Taken Hostage. I was a kid during the hostage crisis and while I was aware of the chaos in Iran and hatred of the Shah, I knew very little about the lengthy chain of events that preceded it. The first episode of Taken Hostage recapped Iran's turbulent 20th Century history and convoluted relationship with the West. I was left fascinated and furious (at both sides) yet still looking forward to part 2. HBOMax has its own doc about the Iranian hostage crisis (simply called Hostages) I'd also like to watch, but a break for some holiday fluff will probably do my spirit and soul more good.
Finally got around to watching "The Go-Go's" documentary. Lots of things in there that a casual fan like me didn't know about the band!
Finished watching the last bit of The Vow on HBO last night, about NXIVM cult leader Keith Raneire. Very strange story, even in the realm of charismatic cult leaders/guru types. Also Spector, about Phil Spector.
Very powerful final episode where the cult's second-in-command who introduced her own daughters to Raneire is sentenced and goes off to jail. But not before breaking down at the realization that what she did was really horrible. It took her a couple decades too long to figure it out.
