My favorite Woody Allen movie is Broadway Danny Rose. And while he didn't write or direct the film, his performance in The Front is perfect. Anytime that movie is on TV, I end up watching it again because of him.
I just watched „Manhattan“ for the first time! I only can describe this film with one word: MASTERPIECE
Look what a great DVD set I got today! These movies aren’t easy to find in Austria, especially for the price of only 60€ for 10 movies
I'd strongly encourage you (and anyone else interested) to check out this thread: Woody Allen: Film by Film Thread It's several years old, but contains 99 pages of thoughts on all his works! If you'd like to review some discussion on any films, you'll find it there. As one of the more active posters on that thread, I know I can say we love to have old discussions revived, and we keep adding new topics, as they appear.
My favorite films by him are Radio Days (1987), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), and Midnight In Paris (2011). Love them movies I
hannah and his sisters is probably his most warmest and life affirming film. I also had a terrible crush on barbara hershey in that movie.
nobody mentions take the money and run but it was a lot of fun, and it was a template for his early seventies comedies. it has the beautiful janet margolin.
finally, crimes and misdemeanors is probably the film that grapples the most serious moral issues. it also has many great performances. the real revelation was alan alda who was then totally cast against type as a real a a**hole. hole
I know Woody is most renowned for his 1970s films but I really love his mid-'80s run of Zelig, Broadway Danny Rose, Purple Rose Of Cairo, Hannah And Her Sisters and Radio Days. His contribution to New York Stories is particularly hilarious as well.
All the films with Diane Keaton (-- though maybe I'd exclude Interiors from the list of "favorites") Also: Broadway Danny Rose Vicky Christina Barcelona Small Time Crooks Blue Jasmine Also Play It Again Sam (has Allen & Keaton but not directed by Woody Allen)
I forgot to mention this, one of my favorite Woody Allen films is “Everyone Says I Love You.”! It’s got a great cast and script. A funny one. Nice to see Edward Norton playing a nice kid for a change, too.And it’s really a fun musical. It works. And of course the classic music by Gershwin, Cole Porter et al is spectacular.
Of those I've seen... Radio Days (#1 for me) Take The Money And Run Broadway Danny Rose Stardust Memories Everyone Says I Love You Didn't really care all that much for Annie Hall and Manhattan. Tbh, his character in these two films creeps me out a bit.
I like Annie Hall, Manhattan has issues. And I always thought it was a little underwhelming after the bravura opening sequence
Manhattan Play It Again Same Blue Jasmine Sleeper Annie Hall, while a terrific film, is terribly dated for me and doesn't make a best of list. In fact, given the choice, I'd much rather see What's Up Tiger Lily
