First time I heard Poetic Champions Compose I was a bit taken aback at how deep Van's voice had gotten. I first came to Van's music in 1989 via his early albums, and played little else for months. One day I borrowed Poetic Champions, Sense of Wonder, and NGNMNT from the library and I remember being quite shocked at how different they were from his early work.

It took awhile for me to grow into Poetic Champions Compose. I think what did it for me was when I heard "Queen of the Slipstream" on the Best of Van Morrison CD. I loved that song so much that it made me go back and revisit PCC. I really love "The Mystery" and "Alan Watts Blues", and "I Forgot That Love Existed". The instrumentals are fine too. I appreciate them more now than I did back when I first heard the album.

I asked this earlier, but does anyone have any info on June Boyce, who sang on NGNMNT, PCC, and Irish Heartbeat? Her voice blends beautifully with Van's.

And did anyone mention that the melody for "The Mystery" was borrowed from Veedon Fleece's "Country Fair"?

I kind of like the way Van's voice changed through the years. What he lost in the screaming dept. he made up for with character, nuance, and a great deal of warmth--heh-heh, except, of course, in those songs where he was complaining about the music biz, rip-off artists, contracts, managers, the music biz, biographers, the recording industry (the music biz).

I was unable to find out any info about June Boyce.

Yep, I believe curbach was the first one to post about the similarity between the two songs back during the Veedon Fleece discussion, which, I think, led to my remark about if you're going to steal, steal from the best, which is a line I stole from somebody.

The perfect day to to begin our appreciation of the lush romanticism of Avalon Sunset would be today. Or at least that's the case according to my lovely wife, with whom I will not disagree on Valentine's Day. No pressure, I'm just sayin...

I haven't had time to give Avalon a listen yet. Besides, I'm trying to write a Van-style lyric outta Jason's comment in rhyme. Help me out here:

"Shuffles his feet waiting for Irish Heartbeat
Way on down by the pylons near Hyndford Street...All right..."

In the 90's it might go something like this:

Van: Meet me down by the pylons
Brian Kennedy: (meet me down by the pylons)
    Van: Down by Avalon
    BK (Down by Avalon)
    Van: Down by the river
    BK: (down by the river)
    Van: I shot my baby
    BK: (I shot my baby)
    Van: Down by the pylons
    BK: (Down by the pylons)
    Van: alright....

    etc....

...and then...and then after the pylons
    there was Little Richard...
"Tutti Frutti, aw rutti" we sang
As we watched the intricate interplay
Of the dappled shadows on the stream... [tinkly piano bit here]
Our eyes crossed with the sniffed glue
    Stolen from Safeway...from Safeway...
We glistened on as one in His name...
    "Aw rutti"...and pylons...

Looks like we knocked out most of Van's 90's output in just a few posts. Onward to Back on Top then?

I hate to break this stream of consciousness. As I am late commenting on Poetic Champions Compose I'm going to bring things temporarily back on the earthly track.

This is the ultimate Van sleeper album. I bought it gave it a listen and virtually wrote it off. I was so enamored of NGNMNT I thought this was one big step backward. Then something weird happened, I noticed that I was listening to Poetic Champions all the time. It crept up on me and finally I had to admit I really liked it.

Alan Watts Blues, Into The Mystery, and Queen of the Slipstream are my favorites, and Motherless Children has a melancholy vibe that could compete with Blind Willie McTell. I found an appreciation for Celtic Evacuation and Spanish Steps when I heard them after driving all night. As I was winding down a two lane country highway in eastern NC, as the sun was starting to peek over the horizon, there was a low foggy mist across the flat piedmont, dotted with scruffy pines and decaying tobacco barns. I was listening to a low-powered college station and some intrepid underclassman DJ played those instrumentals back to back. It fit the moment and the mood so precisely that I've loved those tunes ever since.

It takes a man that is secure in his masculinity to admit he likes an album that was used as background music for soap operas.:shh: :righton:
