Yeah, it needs some polishing and tweaking to really sound right, but you could "get away with" putting it out as is (many old United/Western 3/4 tracks).

It's obviously not easy to "reduce" the old Capitol 3 tracks, and do it right. Look at how many people have tried with only varying degrees of success, starting way back then. But what I was trying to get across is that, besides how one of the original Capitol guys views it (and not in a bad way at all, just different than some might expect), is that this kind of a "remix" is not something to look down upon if you're a "never remix" purist type of person. It's really a whole different thing than the idea of remixing later recordings. Even a guy who was "there" back then seems to agree!

    Agreed. It's NOT playing G-d.

It's simply showcasing the live in-studio sound to the best ablilty. The trick is to not muck it up by adding too much compression, EQ, echo, etc. It's tempting but then you are right back where it came out in the first place.

Steve, do you have (or have heard) the early Capitol V/A stereo demo LP called THE STEREO DISC? John Palladino told me he put that together and "mixed" it (it uses at least some mixes that I think are exclusive to it). He also did some sort of train sound effects recording that I *think* is on there (I don't have a copy) that he recorded on location somewhere in NY. I need to find one of these...

I have the STARS IN STEREO album from 1957 but that's it.

Funny (not so) story: Couldn't find SEPTEMBER SONG in stereo to use on the Jackie Gleason Velvet Brass RAZOR & TIE CD and there it was on the STARS IN STEREO reel. Took me three weeks to figure that out. I was ready to dub the song from my old Capitol stereo LP...

Hi Steve, I noticed on the back of your Del Rack CD of Donovan's Colours, it credits you with remixing. Is the Garland Catch the Wind CD remixed too? Were there special reasons why you needed to remix Donovan? I'm away from them, so I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet

What EQ settings were used for the DCC "A Night At The Opera"?

    Thanks.

Interesting. In a way it's the opposite of the usual. I wonder what the master sounds like. :shh:

Take your DCC Gold CD and apply the following reverse EQ:

    Sontec -2@3k, -1@6k, -1@125 hz. Slope of "6".

    ;)

Add a smidge of warmth, a tad of high end air, 2 glopules of deep down low end and a farthing-worth's measure of motor oil....

Probably somewhat recessed and a little lean, judging from those moves. Isn't the MoFi Gold flat?

I'm not Martin but yes, they recorded everything live. "Trick" recording was reserved for stuff like Surfin' USA, and Kingston Trio records, etc.

Still just the live mono? The 3s still mixed later on...when a release was imminent?

    Thanks.

Yes. But by this stage if you compared the three and the one they would pretty much match. Just more compressor on the mono.

    Thanks very much, Steve.

This may not be the thread for it, and I know you've touched on it in the past, but how much time were you able to spend with John Kraus?

    Steve,

The Patty Andrews thread inspired me to ask what exactly did you have to work with as 'masters' when doing The Andrews Sisters cd and the Bing Crosby Christmas cd?

Thanks Steve. Do you know when he stopped recording? Maybe early 70's (at most)?
