Well, it is known that Billy Joel's "52nd Street" was the first album to be commercially released on Compact Disc in 1982.
I wonder were there any other releases on CD that year? What albums were the followers up?
Perhaps some of you remember yourself buying those early CDs as they first came out...

    Thank you, Ivan
No matter how i tried i haven't managed to find this info anywhere.
So likely there were no European CD releases in 1982? Those days all the CDs for European market were manufactured in Japan, right?

They also made discs in W. Germany, however, I don't know if it was '92. Wasn't it Philips?

Wow, I never knew that, thanks for that bit of trivia!! I loved that album. I bought the vinyl when it first came out and dug the whole thing. "Stiletto" and "Zanzibar" are great songs that I enjoy hearing today whenever they happen to appear on the radio (which isn't that often).

If I'm ever playing a trivia game and this question comes up, I'll have you to thank for giving me the answer!

Wasn't Born to Run one of the early ones, too? I distinctly recall salivating at a copy at a stereo store that offered the Sony 101 player for over a grand. Perfect sound forever!

Thanks for the list, Ivan! Great trivia!

Does anybody else have any "early cds list", be it the next 50 from Japan, or the first pressings from Europe/US, first 50 from specific companies, first cd factories, etc? I know very little of these things...

I was a staff photographer for Leechmere a Best Buy type of store in the Boston area back in 82 . I remember shooting the first CD player , it was expensive i think around $2500.00 ???....maybe more . I do remember it
    being a Sony .
Was Sony the first company to make players ? at least that was what they were stocking.
I only remember them telling us that it was mostly for classical music , meaning that was all that was available.
We were really nonplussed about it , all of us working there were buying vinyl, i don't think it really dawned on us until the prices dropped and we started shooting other models . Everything was beyond our incomes!

It's been mentioned here many times. I think Dire Straits "Brothers In Arms" was the first CD released and Billy Joel's "52nd Street" was the first to sell over a million CDs. I saw it on Sony's site, but it's been a few months.

There are loads of threads on this topic if you look

The first "West German" releases were all from the Polygram plant in Hanover. The first CDs were in the 800 0XX-2 range, and were mainly on the Polydor, Mercury, and Vertigo labels. The Polydor discs had the Red Face label, the Mercurys had a Green Arrow Design, whilst the Vertigos had a Blue Swirl Design. There were also discs on the Charisma and Casablanca labels.

These discs were manufactured from August 1982, with the first disc off the production line being Abba Vistors 800 011-2.

The earliest W German Classical discs were the 400 0XX-2 series on Decca, DG and Philips. These were also pressed 1982/83.

    After the 400 and 800 series, came the 41X and 81X series. I have seen very early discs on 410, 411, 412, 413, 810, 811, and 813.

From What I have seen, the 416, 417, and 42X series came in the mid 80's, as did the 82X discs.

    Hope this is useful

Here's the link I found several months ago that mentions Billy Joel's "52nd Street" as the first CD pressed. Maybe the Dire Straits CD was the first to reach a million in sales. If you look at this link and the others flashing links at the bottom, it tells about the history of the CD. Note the prototype for the CDP-101 in the picture.

The early history of the CD can be very confusing. Keeping it as simple as possible:

Philips and Sony were the two companies that developed the compact disc together. They both began manufacturing the first compact discs in 1982.

Philips owned Polygram which opened a pressing plant in Germany in August 1982.
Sony owned CBS/Sony which opened a pressing plant in Japan in October 1982.
These were the first two CD pressing plants and the only pressing plants in operation for the first couple of years.

So all early CDs were either pressed in Japan (by CBS/Sony) or in Germany (by Polygram). Even CDs that were issued by other companies (such as EMI Records) used one of these two plants to press their CDs for them.

Born to Run was very early, probably late 1982. It was 35DP-21, which means it came out in the second batch of CD's released by CBS/Sony (the first batch being released on 10/01/82).

You still see Sony CDP-101 players for sale in Japan. I would love to have one just for historical value, but I can't bring myself to spend $300 just to look at it.
