It's unprocessed. It's bit-for-bit identical to my UK copy (matrix CDP 7 46361 2 : MASTERED BY NIMBUS), which I bought in January 1987.

    Interesting! :righton:
If somebody can double-check a Japanese 1st or second pressing, it would be very interesting.

    So far, we have:
    The Dreaming (1982):
    UK's 1987 pressing (matrix CDP 7 46361 2 : MASTERED BY NIMBUS) and Japan's 2005 pressing (TOCP-67818) are bit-for-bit identical.
    EMI/Manhattan (E2 46361) has a distinct mastering.

    Peak values for the EMI
    62.5 %
    67.0 %
    60.5 %
    60.8 %
    63.6 %
    61.5 %
    77.6 %
    68.0 %

    HOUNDS OF LOVE (peak levels)

    EMI E2 46164 (Japan TOCP-67819)
    78.4 (96.5)
    66.9 (82.3)
    85.6 (91.7)
    63.6 (68.1)
    89.4 (95.8)
    46.0 (48.5)
    53.2 (57.0)
    91.9 (98.5)

    99.9 (100.0)
    82.9 (88.8)
    100.0 (100.0)

Despite the different peak levels, they sound identical, once normalized to the same level. And I could run them in sync.

    Those 2 sound different!

One minute from "Babooshka", 1st the EMI, then the Japanese (normalized at -3 dB).

I checked a few more of mine:

Never For Ever, bought April 1987
    • EMI Records Ltd. CDP 7463602
    • WG for UK (silver hub, stamped "MADE IN W. GERMANY BY PDO HANOVER")
    • Matrix █ CDP 7 46360 2 2986 816 01 * █
    • Peaks are the same as the ones you list for the Japan mini-LP version.

Hounds of Love, bought May 1986

    • EMI Records Ltd. CDP7 46164 2
    • JP for UK (clear hub, "Biem/Jasrac" / "Made in Japan")
    • Matrix CDP 7 46164 2 4A1 (clean dot matrix, applied post-mastering)
    • Peaks are: 100.0 % - 90.5 % - 100.0 % - 83.7 % - 100.0 % - 61.3 % - 71.0 % - 100.0 % - 93.1 % - 100.0 % - 100.0 % - 100.0 %

Hounds of Love, "EMI100" edition (1997)
    • EMI100 7243 8 57978 2 8
    • UK for UK
    • Matrix █ 857978 2 . 1 EMI SWINDON █ // IFPI L041
    • Stamper :1:5, IFPI 1426
    • Peaks are: 98.7 % - 98.5 % - 98.7 % - 98.0 % - 98.6 % - 98.0 % - 98.0 % - 98.8 % - 95.9 % - 98.6 % - 98.2 % - 98.7 % // 98.7 % - 98.7 % - 98.3 % - 98.0 % - 98.6 % - 65.5 % (last six are bonus tracks)

So there are at least four masterings of Hounds of Love floating around out there, though the two you have only seem to differ in their levels.

    They really sound alike though.

I put one track ("Feel It") them in multi-track in Audition. And playing them back did show a slow lost of sync.

But I repeat: they really sound alike.

Wow. That's bizarre. They don't match up (loss of sync). Not being around my discs, though, I can't tell which is the odd one out re. my US/UK copies.

This post tells us that the Japanese mini-Lp and the original UK share the same peak levels... and I would expect US and Canadian copies of The Dreaming to match also. So we have at least two different masterings of The Dreaming.
And I am still curious about those early Japanese pressings!

Are the tracks on "The Whole Story" just digital clones of the tracks of the original albums (except for the new vocals on Wuthering Heights and Experiment IV)? Or is the mastering really different (EQ...)?

Except my stock EMI UK matches my stock US disc.

This is curious. Why would a Canadian issue be the odd one out?

I'll have to do more analysis when I get back to my discs.

    I agree this is curious.
Your UK, your USA and the Toshiba mini-LP share the same peak levels? (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost.php?p=3632123&postcount=54

My "Dreaming" is from the Canadian boxset. I cannot access it right now (moving, everything in a box). But there are no mention of any remastering in the boxset, but maybe they did... After all, somebody did master the 2 bonus discs.
We really need more info. I hear clear sonic differences (apart from peak levels) for The Dreaming and Never For Ever. I still have to test Lionheart, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.
(I really dislike the sound on my Canadian The Red Shoes and hope there are many masterings of it)

  17. Unfortunately the copy I own does not have an OBI strip.

I think it sounds very good but curious about the pastmaster since the Beach Boys sound outstanding in that series. Obviously the WG pressings differ as well, this is how it looks like:

Woot! A Kate Bush thread. Since someone ressurected the thread and it had a bunch of EAC levels I compared them to the version of TKI in the Japanese "This Woman's Work" boxed set. The EAC levels from that box match the CP35 version. The matrix numbers on it are: TOCP-6460 1A1 TO. I am not sure what the other discs match.

After a careful listen this and my two BT discs. this is now my preferred pressing :)

All the West German first pressings I have seen have had this 02 matrix.

This is quite common with the early PolyGram pressings for the very first issue to appear with a matrix ending not with 01.

I have been hunting for that elusive 01 to no avail so I now assume that the 02 is the first press first batch.

Several of my Red Faced and Green Arrow discs start with 02 and above.

    Simon :)

According to this thread, the pastmasters version is the same as the BT version. You can't have too many copies of the Japanese cover, though....
