Treat yourself to this recording. It is historic and it is beautiful, even though it happened before I was even born.

Yes, but I hope Pentatone and other companies put out new stuff in SACD too -- doing so is essential to keeping the format alive. SACD cannot simply rely on reissues.

I hear you. The rate this genre has been going, the future looks pretty bleak.

I have to check into this CD. I have a CD with Edwin Fischer conducting from the piano of some JS keyboard concertos and was very impressed. This is a tremendous combination.

I hope these 2 all-star cast Bach Brandenburg Concertos by the Academy of St Martin can be released in PentaTone. These were released individually in the early 80's and have remained my favorite even though I have competing versions from English Concert/Trevor Pinnock and AAM/Christopher Hogwood.

    Julia Fischer

    Re Pentatone

    Robert,
Fyi, Miss Fischer has signed to Decca, although she has one album left on her contract with PentaTone. So it looks like one more SACD and that's it. I hope she records the Silbelius concerto, would be nice to have hi-rez of that.

I believe Decca and Philips are just different labels under UniversalMusic while PentaTone is a spin-off from Philips.

Here is my attempt to capture Anne-Sophie Mutter and HvK at the 1984 New Year Concert performing an All Bach program shown on a DVD. Screen capture did not work for me while a shot from the digital camera has not produced the best image. It was nice experiment though.

I hope she keeps recording and that she does so in SACD.

they tend to be better mastered than Philips though, for whatever reason

sometimes Pentatones are a little loud too (e.g. that Oboe etc. SACD with Britten Prokofiev, JC Bach, Mozart, etc.), but sometimes they're perfect. Philips seems like they just like it cranked.

Small companies always execute better than large companies. PentaTone engineers were Philips engineers before the spin-off.

Are any PentaTone SACDs new, i.e., recorded recently? I thought they were a reissue label limited to quad recordings that had been on the Philips label long before Universal bought Polygram

All the SACD's by Julia Fischer are new releases by PentaTone. Generally, most names you do not recognize are probably new releases and not re-issues.

Performer(s) Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal/Charles Dutoit
Medium and Label CD/London 410 254-2 (West Germany Pressing)

Absolutely love this tandem, more or as much as the BPO/HvK and or Cleveland/Dohnányi pairings.
