Uchida/Boulez/Cleveland Orchestra on Philips playing Piano Concerto and two Klavierstucke, along with Berg and Webern compositions.

Prazak Quartet on Praga Digital (SACD hybrid) playing String Quartet No.4 and Verklarkte Nacht, which was my introduction to Schoenberg via a Columbia recording.

I have one other baroque recording by him on a Sony non-hybrid, i.e. single-layered SACD, which I have yet to hear since I do not have an SACD player.

Thanks. His Vivaldi and Bach is second to none IMO. I love his recording of the Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord by Bach - gorgeous stuff!

Just ordered this Brahms CD-set to beef up my chamber music collection. I already have many recordings by Christoph Eschenbach as a concert pianist.

    Re Brahms chamber music box

I'll be interested to know what you think of the Brahms quintet with Eschenbach on piano. I have not heard it, but I do think he is a fine pianist.

Today, I found a couple used Sony single-layer SACDs (with cardboard slipcases), ones I've been seeking for a while:
    • Vladimir Horowitz - Chopin, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Liszt
      Sony Classical SACD 1999.

    • Igor Stravinsky - The Rite of Spring + The Firebird Suite
Sony Classical SACD 1999, 'Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky'.

    Now playing:
    • Messiaen: Vignt Regards sur l'Enfant-Jesus - Steven Osborne (piano)
      Hyperion 2002.

I own most of those recordings in an older three disc set that excludes the quartets. I like them a lot. Do you know the clarinet quintet? It is one of the pinnacles in all chamber music (IMHO - as a clarinet student).

Today, Stravinsky. I don't listen to this disc very often, but I put it in last night and am liking it lots.

If you're susceptible to this work (as I emphatically am), please let me commend to your attention the old Capitol recording by the Hollywood String Quartet with pianist Victor Aller.

You also might enjoy the work in its guise as a piece for two pianos, four hands. I waffle over which way I like it better.

Eschenbach was a fine concert pianist, though he is mainly in conducting these days. I will post my impression after I have had the chance to listen to the set. The comments posted on Amazon about this set were all very positive.

This 2 CD-set just arrived today. The last Handel's oratorio I bought was the Messiah SACD-set by Colin Davis and the LSO from earlier this year. While the playing was fine, I was somewhat disappointed with the solo singing. It seems that the solo singing of the 1967 version was better. At any rate, I hope to collect some of the remaining oratorios by Handel I do not already have, which are not many.

I particularly enjoy his reading of Tchaikovsky's Seasons from a couple years ago (with Sym. No. 5).

      London orig. 1976 LP.

I love his Mozart sonatas. I have a 2CD set of his Beethoven and should crack that baby open soon.

  24. After the concert tonight at the Sydney Opera House, some more Schubert.
