Speaking of Liszt and Richter, I just ordered this, based on a glowing review from Classics Today. Anyone else hear this?

    Richter

Agreed. This is the version to get. The 2001 Philips '50 Greatest Recordings' 96kHz/24-bit remaster (only six years after Cozart Fine's issue) has an annoying buzz, audible on headphones during some quiet passages. No reason to mess with perfection. If you don't know Richter, this is a great place to start. Plus, it's cheap.

I found this Gilels set on DG sounds quite good.

I have about a dozen sets of the Beethoven Sonatas and that one is in my top five. Great sound and sublime slow movements. Just wish his fast movements had more zip to them.

I use itunes :shh: to check SQ. I just went over there and the AB set sounds fine to me. It's a fairly modern recording, IIRC. Great technical prowess on this group, from what I have heard.

Don't get me started on Gilels! What a great interpreter or the Romantic literature. Very sensitive without turning sappy. Here's a great set, fantastic for late-night. Just for yuks, I've included a picture of the 1970s Angel/Melodiya LP, as well. I can't vouch for the LP, but the MFSL CD sounds lovely:

By the way, the recording from the Melodiya/MFSL disc by Gilels is also in the Vox Box found here at a much more reasonable price. (I haven't heard the Vox set, so I'm not commenting on their mastering.)

This is a very good set and highly regarded, I might say, amongst the lovers of Beethoven's quartets.
I think it is an excellent choice if you need to have only one complete set of Beethoven's quartets. The sound is good, not the best, but nothing really offensive there.

My first choice though is the Takacs Quartet but that would be significantly more expensive since they are available, as far as I know, only in sets.

I think that BMG might have some or all of these.

I like Gilels a lot. He never got the attention he deserved. Last month or so I got an old Columbia LP of Gilels playing Chopin's 1st concert with E. Ormandy conducting. I haven't listened to it yet but I 'll probably do it tonight.

    Cool.

    Just sent you a PM.

  19. I don't have this comp, but I know most of the recordings on it and it ought to be a winner. For the two Richter selections, if these are (as I assume) from the 1958 Sofia recital, the sound quality is dodgy but the playing is awesome indeed.

I quite enjoy the sound quality of the HDCDs from RR. I can't get excited about all their titles but just got this one today.

LIVE on the St. Mary's Cathedral Ruffatti pipe organ and the Rodgers 'Royal V' touring organ.

I am just amazed at the paucity of Ormandy's recordings that have been remastered to CD's.
