Never noticed that the reflection in the lid of the piano is Beethoven. VERY cool.

I never got that CD set, instead I got the newer EMI full cycle. I don't think I made the right choice. :shake:

  4. I'm just noticing it now - very cool indeed.

I have the original recording on LP and have known the playing style of Stephen Kovacevich for some times.

Has anyone ever seen a CD of Vladimir Horowitz performing the Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto with Fritz Reiner and the CSO? I have the LP, which is not in the usual pristine condition most of my other LP's are in.

Might have missed it Stuart. How have you been enjoying the Bach organ set?

Bill, I really have enjoyed the monaural set of Walcha's JS Bach Organ Works. Even though most of the recordings were done in the 40's and the 50's, the sound is surprisingly clean so far and the remastering is quite good. For under $20, this set cannot be beat. I also ordered the Walcha's stereo set yesterday from Newbury Comics through Amazon at a great price. Thanks for bringing up Walcha. I have largely forgotten the few Walcha's recordings on LP I have, though I think they may be harpsichord music instead of organ music. The most amazing aspect of Walcha's life was he became blind at 19, yet he managed to make all these great recordings and was teacher to many American organists.

If I recall correctly, some discs from this series go for a pretty penny.

  16. I was very surprised to see that as well. I had bought mine when they came out and thought about adding some titles but depending on the title they now go for quite a bit. :sigh:

    Two -

    One from the Vienna Octet:

    http://www.amazon.com/Mendelssohn-O...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1228831798&sr=1-2

but purchased years ago when it was available domestically. The Beethoven Septet (4 strings 3 winds) involves the same musicians as on the Schubert; the Mendelssohn requires 8 string players and was recorded more than 10 years later, so I doubt there was very much personnel overlap.

    and this from the Cleveland:

    http://www.amazon.com/Mendelssohn-O...r_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1228831905&sr=1-10

I'd recommend the first if you can find it at a reasonable price.

By the way, sticking with my clarinet theme, the Grand Partita K 361 pictured above features some lovely writing for the clarinet, as do K. 375 and K. 388 (both wind serenades).

Hi, Bill. The 1963 version on with the NYPO has much better sound quality (Sony SM2K 63159). The DG version is my favorite 2 of all Mahler Seconds.

    Hey guys,
does anyone has this LP? If so, can you tell me how does your copy sound?

I got it recently, just listened to it and it sounds kind of muddy. I have the XRCD which is very bright. I am just curious did I get a bad copy?

Funny you mentioned this, Jay. I thought it sounded 50'ish when playing it. I will look around for the '63. However, as darkmatter pointed out, the performance is excellent IMO. Not too brassy, which sometimes Lenny can be for me. My pressing is from the U.S. It is the Royal Edition with paintings from Prince Charles.
