I've never heard any but his M1 and M8, but Kubelik, I have noticed over the years, is many people's choice (not mine) in the "If I buy only one set of Mahler Symphonies, which should it be?" game. Nowadays, we do not expect the likes of the Berlin Philharmoniker or the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to provide an excellent performance on some Bach passion. Perhaps this is due to cultural shift and that smaller ensembles that specialize in baroque works have taken over. Thirty to forty years ago, these premier orchestras in Europe used to perform such sacred works a bit more often and actually did a pretty good job as well. At least I am glad such recording is still available for me to enjoy in the comfort of my own home.

 

Kubelik was supposed to be good at Mahler. Do you have any of his Mahler's recordings?

Is the Simon Rattle's Mahler set with the BPO? I did not drill down further but the CD cover does not say that ...

 

After the New Year, I will try MDT. My first target will be the Harnoncourt's Complete Bach Cantatas.
