    Here's the fourth.

Funny you should ask, Stuart. I read this just before checking that out.

I found this one, but besides the M2, I haven't liked much of Rattle's Mahler. Very good price, though. http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//5007212.htm

Here's a single CD on Pentatone for you, Stuart: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//PTC5186183.htm Two, actually: http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//PTC5186166.htm

A lot of people like this box set by Bertini, and it's cheap (none for you, Stuart): http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//3402382.htm

Here's one I like, Tennstedt. He may be my favorite after Bernstein. http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//5729412.htm

I've never heard any but his M1 and M8, but Kubelik, I have noticed over the years, is many people's choice (not mine) in the "If I buy only one set of Mahler Symphonies, which should it be?" game. It's a good price, on par with some A.M. sellers. It's almost $200 on Amazon itself. http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//4637382.htm

And here's jazz Mahler. I have the second one. You might like this, Eddie. http://www.mdt.co.uk/MDTSite/product//9100462.htm

Based on the prices, I think the Kubelik's set is quite highly regarded ...

    Nope. Transfer one over, though.

Mahler: The Song of the Earth on Living Stereo Hybrid. Fritz Reiner conducting.

    Mahler

I don't care for much of Rattle's Mahler, either. Better to pick and choose. His Ninth from earlier this year with the BPO is excellent, for starters.

That Fifth is good, but the Eighth is not -- waste of money, IMHO.

I have so much Mahler, I never got around to getting this set, but it is pretty well-regarded as an excellent, straight-ahead complete cycle. Gielen gets similar reviews, but his is more expensive (I have it).

Jay, Did Simon Rattle conduct the BPO for the EMI Mahler set you saw on the MDT website? Unless I missed it, I did not see BPO on the CD-set cover ...

Hey, isn't the third part still open? I just posted there.

Today was an all Mozart day. It was a while since I had listened to him and I had forgotten how great he really is.

Some times the fact that he is the most popular of the classic composers turns me off.

    This is a great recording!

Much better than the highly praised Walter-Ferrier set IMHO.

I may have a good number of recordings in Mozart's works, he is not one of my favorite composers.

I only have 2 CD's by Simon Rattle. They are both Holst's Planets. One was recorded with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (where he came to fame) while the other was with the BPO. I am still somewhat unfamiliar with his style.

Some are Berlin and some are City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. I don't think he's gotten around to re-recording any, but it's a long time since I really kept track of Rattle.

Since Simon Rattle has been recording with EMI exclusively, the re-packaging of these singles should be no problem. It looks like BPO continues to record with Abbado on DG ...

I though so Stuart, I don't remember you having mentioned too much of him.

Mozart was one of the first composers that I listened to when I was still in my early teens. It served as the perfect initiation to the world of classical music.

I still return to him periodically and I think he is great, but I cannot say that he is my favorite composer either.

I liked Gardiner's Beethoven. His Piano Concerto #4, though, plays at the lowest volume I have ever heard on a recording.

I long-term loaned the symphonies to a friend. I should see about getting them back sometime. OTOH, I don't mind letting my friends hold onto CDs I'm probably never going to play again.

I know if I use the term bubble gum of classical music, many Mozart diehards will be quite upset with me. But that is exactly how I feel about many (not all) of his works. I find Mozart's works simply are not as substantial as those of JS Bach.

Gardiner's is one of my favorite cycles of Beethoven Symphonies, especially in the early symphonies.

    This must be a re-release?
