Who can forget what Piano Concerto No. 21 has inspired! I have both the CD and the movie (on VHS) ...

As posted on the LvB Symphony thread:

This is a love it or hate HIP effort. Enjoyable at my end, but I would grab the Hogwood before tapping into this one. Also, I would not disagree if some felt this reading dragged and was very slow at times. However, this may just be the charm of this recording. :righton:

Here are the 6 Sonatas for Flute & Harpsichord by Mozart. No. 4 in F, K. 13 was featured in the movie "Love Story" that was released in the late 60's. It is a beautiful piece and this 3-CD Vox box may be the only collection that has this work.

John I was listening to the record and it sounds great. I think the Odyssey are just another example of bad transfering.

I am sure that the out-of-print Columbia Masterworks cd that I linked has much better mastering.

    Thanks George :)

I think Stuart's idea is a good one and this would definitely be an interesting discussion. On the other hand, a discussion on Wagner's Operas would be more meaningful but also more intense, time consuming and maybe not for everybody.

I think Odyssey was the budget label division of Columbia Masterworks.

You guys should go for it!

Me, I plan to take on the Beethoven sonatas once the Symphony thread is done.

    Yes that is right.
The ones with the better mastering have Columbia Masterworks Heritage on the upper right corner and were released in 1997.

Is ArkivMusic selling a CDR version of this recording yet?

    Casadesus

    Re Mozart PC's by Casadesus

This is an excellent Casadesus disc of Mozart piano concertos Nos. 24 & 27, conducted by George Szell with Cologne West German Radio Symphony Orchestra (1960, 1958 -- mono, pretty sure). A Weber piano work rounds out the disc. PS. There are a couple young French pianists I recommend: Frederic Francois-Guy [contracted to Naive] and David Fray [Virgin Classics].

I would buy from either ImportCD or Newbury Comics. I rarely buy at Amazon as they are almost as overpriced as our favorite ArkivMusic except that I do not have to pay sale tax to Amazon ...

I'm quite fond of Rudolf Serkin's accounts of the Mozart concerti on Columbia, mono recordings mostly conducted by Alexander Schneider and George Szell. His later efforts on DG I think caught him when he was too old.

Now that I've read so much about people not being able to contact ImportCD, I thought I'd pimp for Newbury, with whom I am always able to stay in contact should I need something.

Tell me, why is there a need to contact ImportCD? I must have bought from ImportCD at least a dozen times and have never encountered any problems. All CD's always arrive brand new. My experience with Newbury is the same - never need to contact it. Unlike this MovieMars in NC that sent me a used CD that skips this last time. I cut it off after 2 orders for good.
