Those flute sonatas are lovely, Stuart. I have the Naxos issues.

I have a number of CD's on JS Bach Flute Concertos by the late Jean-Pierre Rampal. It is beautiful music, as all JS Bach works are. Emanuel Pahud is supposed to be the top flutist in the world. I am still waiting for the following CD to arrive where the top flutist performed with the top clarinetist.

I've always had a soft spot for the Bach and Handel Flute Sonatas (and the Handel Recorder Sonatas). They constitute some of the most relaxing music I know.

BTW, I just listened to the Prokofiev flute sonata today from a five disc Prokofiev set recently purchased from MDT. I think I had a 1960's vintage LP, but I suspect it's been 25 years at least since I last heard it. Both recordings by Rampal. Very nice music. Easily accessible.

Also, I heard Pahud in concert several years ago. I was impressed. Perhaps more significantly, the professional fl[a]utist who went with me was equally impressed.

    +1:edthumbs:

Although, musically for Elgar, I prefer the cello concerto.

  21. I second that.

Same here. The violin concerto is nice but the cello one is something else!

Speaking of Trevor Pinnock, I've recently got this complete set of Mozart Symphonies.

I think the period instruments do the music incredible justice. It sounds much more exotic in a strange way. Close miking and creates a nice crisp, dry sound. I was especially never a fan of period instruments on the late symphonies, as I thought they warranted a more massive, weighty, Beethoven-esque approach...but even they are nice in a charming way on this set. Again I think a lot has to do with the recording techniques.
