It is a distinct possibility he is "rubbing it in" with a "Look what I own and you don't" listing.

This is just like the Neil Young Archives release dates being listed and held back for a later date. Teasing people can get irritating.

    he wont sell it.

he would be foolish to try and sell it in this economy, down the road he could sell it for a lot more and bring in more potential buyers to fight over it.

he is just checking the market.

Of course, it's possible. We can't say that with certainty since we obviously don't know. One could suggest that his behavior supports the notion that he is toying with people, but it isn't the only explanation. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, though he has wasted a lot of people's time.

For all we know, he could be following this thread and having himself a good laugh.

I don't want to venture into discussions of the economy except to say that he would likely make a very nice sale at any time. There are collectors with the means out there at any time.

Of course, since he has just one copy to sell, he will never be able to test the economy theory.

Now, let's please not continue the discussion of the economy as a factor here.

Why doesn't he just put a high reserve on it then, like $50,000 ?

Is this really a rare item or were there plenty of them available back then when he bought it? Could he have bought 100 of them if he wanted?

Judging from the times of the bids, it looks like one bidder took it up $700+ dollars.

You would be crazy to open it. It only has that value as a sealed item. I realize it has the OBI strip, but used copies sell for a lot less.
