    I finally obtained the Japanese black-triangle CD of The Best of Blondie. The catalog number is CP32-5349. I remember reading positive comments about this disc here awhile back, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately, I found the CD to be a bit fatiguing. Deborah Harry's vocals are bright in several spots. This got me wondering whether there were different masterings among black-triangle copies and among different versions of this compilation.

    As many of you probably know, there are both 12-track and 14-track versions of this compilation, depending on the market and timing of the release. Unique tracks on the 14-track version are "Denis", "Union City Blue", and "Picture This". The unique track on the 12-track version is "One Way or Another".

    I have checked two 12-track discs and two 14-track discs on EAC. Below are the discs tested and the results.

    Discs Tested

    1. 12-track, Japan-for-U.S. pressing, Chrysalis catalog number VK 41337, matrix code is "DIDX-71 21 +++++"

    2. 12-track, German-for-Europe pressing, Chrysalis catalog number 610 015, matrix code is "SONOPRESS 610015 A" (Note: The title of this compilation is actually Blondie's Hits.)

    3. 14-track, West German-for-Europe pressing, Chrysalis catalog number CCD 1371, matrix code is "CCD 1371 2891444 01"

    4. 14-track, Japanese black-triangle pressing, Chrysalis catalog number CP32-5349, matrix code is "CP32-5349 1A2 TO"

    EAC results

    1. 12-track, Japan-for-U.S. pressing, Chrysalis catalog number VK 41337, matrix code is "DIDX-71 21 +++++"

    2. 12-track, German-for-Europe pressing, Chrysalis catalog number 610 015, matrix code is "SONOPRESS 610015 A" (Note: The title of this compilation is actually Blondie's Hits.)

    3. 14-track, West German-for-Europe pressing, Chrysalis catalog number CCD 1371, matrix code is "CCD 1371 2891444 01"

    4. 14-track, Japanese black-triangle pressing, Chrysalis catalog number CP32-5349, matrix code is "CP32-5349 1A2 TO"

    So the two 12-track discs appear to have different masterings. It's been some time since I listened to either one, but I don't recall them being too bad.

    Has anyone found a different mastering for the 12-track version?

    The two 14-track discs also seem to have different masterings. The levels for the West German CCD 1371 disc are very low. Given that I found the CP32 disc to be bright, I am eager to give the CCD disc a spin. I haven't listened to it for a long time.

    Has anyone found a different mastering for the 14-track version? Is there a different mastering for the black-triangle issue?

    Keith, I can check my copy later today. I think that I have a US for US or possibly a Canadian.

    Is The Best of Blondie the one with the speed issues or am I thinking of something else?

    Thanks. It appears that your disc, which is later than my two 14-track discs has a different mastering. How does it sound.

    Thanks. Your disc has the same catalog number as everton's, though the two were pressed at different plants. Still, your disc has the same mastering as everton's. How does it sound?

    I did see your post in that older thread but did not see a lot of EAC data there.

    I think it sounds bright and (according to my wife who happened to pass by when I was comparing it to the Greatest Hits CD) thin. One or two songs (especially "In The Flesh") sound like they have a tape-speed problem. Still, I'm not very picky about the sound. I grew up listening to these songs on a portable cassette radio (and perhaps enjoyed them more then than now).

    I only have the CP32. Isn't it supposed to sound a little bright -- all those cymbals on the intro to Denis -- crash, crash, CRASH.

    I like it.

    It was a while ago that I compared it to my U.S. pressing. I recall it being a bit brittle in places -- which surprised me, because I was expecting something more laid-back.

    If I get a chance I'll listen again and try to note some specifics...

    Thanks. There has been discussion in the past of tape-speed issues, but I am not up on the details.

    My issue with the CP32 disc when I listened to it a few days ago was that Harry's vocals were piercing in places. I did not enjoy the listen. Now I need to go back and compare to some tracks on the Parallel Lines DCC gold disc.

    Thanks. Much appreciated. I may still try to get a copy of this mastering on the cheap just to see how it stacks up against other versions.

    If I remember correctly, there was a discussion in a past thread on the possibility that this CD would be remastered. If they are working on it, perhaps you may want to wait. Having said that, I'd like to add that the CD, as it is now, is not excessively bright. It's certainly listenable (but my standard is not as high as others' here). Its tape-speed issue might bother you more than its brightness does.

    I've recently acquired a Denon Japan for UK pressing, Chrysalis CCD 1371. It seems to have a unique mastering.

  19. I just realized I have the Japan-for-US Chrysalis CD (same as Keith's), smooth sided case, "CSR COMPACT DISC" x3 in the hub. I agree with Keith, on first listen it is too bright, not a great listen. Knowing that it is a CSR Japan pressing, I decided it may be a disc with improperly recognized pre-emphasis flags so I ran the tracks through Sox to fix that. The results are substantially better, the disc is much more listenable. However, I'm not quite convinced that it has pre-emphasis as the symbols now seem a bit muddy and buried.

    This is so funny Keith. I just discovered that I have 3 seperate masterings on this title last week. I was gonna start a thread about it myself :) I had 3 copies and was thinking about selling a couple when I ran them through EAC and found they were all 3 different! It just makes me wonder how many titles are out there we don't know about (yet). Chrysalis, in my experience, had fewer titles with multiple masterings compared to say a label like Sony. Excluding some black triangle titles (EMI more than Chrysalis),the only ones that come to mind off the top of my head with different masterings are Jethro Tull (Broadsword, Aqualung, etc.) and this Blondie title. I'm sure there are others. I haven't critically listened to the 3 to determine which I prefer as of yet.

    I recently picked up the DCC of PL and it is great.

    I thought about getting the Best of CP32 pressing, I thought I heard it was good. I guess I will avoid it now.

    So is there a prefered Best of ?
