Inspired by Roland's thread on the various CD masterings of Piece of Mind, here goes a new thread to cover all other IRON MAIDEN albums. I say we start with the S/T Iron Maiden by collecting EAC levels from various CDs: original EMI UK, Capitol UK, Japanese 1st CP32 and 2nd CP28 pressings, Japanese TOCP, EMI UK / Castle US 2CD sets, W. German pressings, etc. I will be putting tonight the EAC levels for the S/T from my CP32 and Castle CDs, if somebody doesn't do it first. Any comments about listening impressions are also welcome
You have the CP32's covered, but tonight would you like me to stick the EAC's up of the original EMI (2nd only to the CP32's)?
Ok, what do I need to do I have never done an EAC log before, I use EAC, is it just a case of copying and pasting the log when I find it into this thread, or does it involve something more complex?
Run EAC, select all tracks and say 'Test selected tracks'. It gives you the levels in the log, just paste them here, along with the track names. No need for the whole log. How about we also give matrix numbers / country of origin? Weren't there some EMI CDs made in Holland and not UK? Or are they all made there, but released for the UK market?
Did a table tor the CP32 and Castle of Iron Maiden, waiting for you to post the following info from other pressings as well: 1. CD catalog number/label 2. Song names with EAC levels 3. CD duration hh:mm (as shown in the EAC bar) 4. CD country of manufacture 5. CD matrix info

has anyone tried to match to "masterings" against eachother with the phase reversed.....ie, tried to get cancellation. if one mastering cancel's against t'other then they must be the same no? rather than whatever the rippinng software tells you.no?
Sure, but for that reason you must have both masterings ripped on your drive. It's probably easier when everybody contributes the levels from his CD and we compare them in this table.
Great idea for a thread! I'm not up on all the various CD pressing variations but I have the S/T EMI CDM 7 52018 2 and it's on the "Fame" label.... not sure if all the originals were part of the "Fame" series? Regardless, I just checked EAC and the peak levels are identical to the EMI listed above.
i understand that, but what if say a uk cd, and a japanese cd of the very same recording are at different levels. say the uk engineer brought the level down by 0.5dB (dbfs) as the japanese cd showed an over level (more than 1 or 2 consecutive samples at full scale), his source was the japan master. he therefore brings the level down a touch, so that his master has no overs. now you have the same thing, but a 1/2 db lower. your rippeing tool would give you info saying they're different, but they're really exactly the same recording and "mastering".

The Fame series are a different release than the original UK 1st pressings on EMI, so I believe your CD should enter the table. Well, technically bringing the levels down is considered a mastering move, isn't it? Clearly the best indication would be through listening and cancelling files in a wave analysing software, but that would not be easily accomplished. That's why I'll stick to comparing peak levels, its better than nothing. Also, as I said earlier, any listening impressions and comments are welcome.
Wasn't Fame the original releases, I have yet to see an Iron Maiden or Killers Cd original not on EMI/Fame, the Fame label was introduced for Maiden vinyl in 1982, clearly years before a Cd release??
If I remember correctly, I prefer the US Captiol CD mastering of the self-titled debut over the EMI family of masterings (I think the EMI family of masterings are all related, i.e. are derived from the same original analog to digital transfer). I think that the Castle 2-CD set has the same mastering as the original US Capitol version. I have to check my versions at home.
