Zemeckis is in talks to secure the rights to Beatles' recordings to re-make Yellow Submarine, using motion-capture (whatever that is.)

Jim Carrey to star as Old Fred?

Well, did you ever see the remake of Casablanca starring..David Soul ?

Some movies should just be left alone.
On the other hand, maybe the new Yellow Submarine will be great, but in a totally different way.

Its a great idea.. I mean think about it for todays youth. MMT, Yellow Submarine sound like the ultimate stoner music movie... but alas they don't do the job. They are far too quirky, too low budget, too british! I agree with the article on slashfilm- this could be the most lavish stoner movie ever. Perhaps more so than Casino Royale (is that even a stoner film?).

Only if they do something wildly different with it. Same plot but MUCH different presentation.

ROBERT STIGWOOD BETTER NOT TOUCH IT.

    That is all.

Well considering the Beatles had next-to-nothing to do with the original, I don't feel this is any more sacreligious than reviving, say, the Beatles animated TV show or something.

It would be interesting if they actually just re-created the original - using the same dialog and everything - but just did it using 3D motion capture techniques. If they did it like that, it might be an interesting experiment, to say the least.

Otherwise, I envision it looking like a slightly-more-polished version of "Rock Band." :sigh:

And I don't see it mentioned anywhere whether he's actually using the original Beatles recordings, or whether they just secured the rights to the songs, which would then be re-recorded by "contemporary" artists (a la the Sgt. Pepper movie, or Across the Universe).

I'm not interested for two reasons:

    1) I don't like the motion-capture technology Zemeckis uses (it's been used in movies like Monster House, Beowulf, and The Polar Express). It has a very creepy "uncanny valley" effect which is totally off-putting (to me, at least).

    2) I haven't liked anything Zemeckis has done since Back To The Future Part III, which was made almost twenty years ago, and even that was the weakest movie in that series. I can't stand Forrest Gump or most of what he did after it. (I know most people seem to love "Gump," but I've tried to watch it three times and never gotten farther than half an hour in. :hide: )

I don't think it's impossible to improve on Yellow Submarine, but I'd rather see it done with traditional animation, or even Pixar-style 3D animation (I may not like it as much, but at least it doesn't creep me out the way that motion capture style does).

Who knows, I could be wrong and it could be brilliant. But it doesn't look that way to me. If you want a brilliant Beatles-related movie by Zemeckis, check out I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Now that's a great movie.

Years ago, when I was much younger, I had a kind of video collage/sketch comedy/satire show that I did at my local public access cable station. (Man they were desperate for stuff!)

One very brief bit was me standing behind a podium and announcing "And now, a tribute to Robert Zemeckis, director of Forrest Gump" (which had just come out). I then cut to the scene in The Firm when Tom Cruise is beating seven shades of ---- out of Wilford Brimley, screaming at him "You stink! You son of a -----!".

You know, I still feel that way.

I do NOT like that lame-o 3-D computer animated crap. It looks bogus. With the exception of the music content, I'm not that thrilled with the Rock Band animation either - it looks WEIRD.

Another reason to remake Yellow Sub enables it to be available. This way there will be no back and forth with Apple and UA/MGM.

I'm apathetic about this concept. They should just do a "new" film, based around Magical Mystery Tour, and have the fabs saving the environment.

But I've liked enough of Zemeckis' material to think this might work. If they try to follow in the footsteps of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, it should be worth seeing, if not completely on the mark.

I agree, and hope there is a blu-ray release of the original movie before this comes out.

I'd like a live-action Yellow Submarine; with Liam Gallagher as John Lennon, Jack Black reprising his role as Paul McCartney, Brad Pitt as George Harrison, and Sir Ben Kingsley as Ringo.

Disney has a track record with animation like....well, like the Beatles do with music. I think it's possible it might turn out pretty cool.

This could turn into a Ron Howard/Jim Carrey "Grinch" kind of thing.
