The one that beat all others for me including the MFSL is the Japanese 1st pressing catalog #P35D-20034.
How's the original U.S. CD version? I got rid of mine years ago when my collection was getting too big. It's on my rebuy list, but I was planning on buying a used copy of the original pressing.
IIRC it is very similar to the original Canadian and W. Germany pressings. These don't sound too bad, but do not have the sense of realism like the Japan 1st does is all.
I found the bass to be really hard sounding. No bounce, rhythm or bloom. Too processed. I preferred the original US cd to the new one, although it was not my favourite ever version by any stretch.
The new remaster is a bit loud. I have the original U.S. and actually listened to it the other day. It sounds quite good and can be found for a couple bucks usually.
I have the MFSL UDCD 650 UDII and the Island P35D-20034 JPN. I won't part with the MoFi, but I listen to the P35D-20034.
I just bought the lastest 2 cd remaster 3 weeks ago , it's the only copy i own so can not compare it to anything else , it's really good , could be a bit better , but by no means is it terrible .. I will agree to this a bit , it could be a bit "warmer & more open"
I don't remember to tell you the truth if you're speaking of the USA, Canadian and W. German pressings as I only still have the Japan. Between the Japan and MFSL the difference is in the presentation. The MFSL bass and treble sound squeezed and overly present ie: too far forward compared to the mid-range and sound kind of flat and artificial to the point of distortion when turned up loud. The Japan remains smooth, relaxed and dynamic throughout volume gain with incredible staging and definition.
