That is a wicked small space. Worse than Joe Meek's closet!

Berliner recording studio, turn of the century.

Recording machine at right, probably cutting via the 'acid etching' process.

Two shots of my buddy Dave's very retro voiceover studio in Seattle, plus a photo of the Brubeck Quartet at NYC's 30th Street Studios -- look at how simple the set-up is! No gobos, no isolation booths, just 4 stellar musicians playing together in the same space, captured on tape. Lovely.

Our host posted these earlier. Notice that on two of the photos, the tape runs "oxide out" and on the third, it runs the way we are used to today, "oxide in." (Look at the position of the record heads.) The photos also show that Capitol used plenty of RCA mics, not just the Neumann's with which they are so well associated.

How the heck could they keep four guitars tuned together in unison?

In post #22, he's working on "CAP 8393-1." Anybody know what that was? Matrix numbers were up around 11000 in 1953, so I'm guessing it was something originally recorded in 1950 or so.
