SH Spotlight Pictures of recording studios, old and new. Do you have any?

I`ve got a few shots that I took at Wally Heider`s S.F. studio in 1977 but I have no idea how to post them here, anyone with the knowhow want to fill me in (private reply) ?

Very nice pictures Of Led Zeppelin in studio!!!
The drums of John Bonham recorded with only 4 mics... I can't believe that!

 

What mic is that over Bohnam's rack tom? Looks like a choir mic.

 

Looks like a AKG mike, of the sort that The Beatles were using during 'Let It Be.'

 

That's where the sessions with Geoff Emerick and the REDD.51 were held, no?

I'm not sure who that is with Page, but it isn't Glyn Johns.

Bonzo's foot pedal creek

Yet you could always hear the creeking sound of Bonzo's foot pedal when he played. HIs drums were so well recorded and mixed.

Mainly used by Queen (at one time they owned it) and David Bowie. I think sometimes the actual casino (!) was used for recording, as illustrated in the gatefold of Queen's 'Jazz' LP, and video monitors were used between the large space and the control room?

A pity the place is now a bar or something.

 

P.S. I think (not a big fan of trusting Wikipedia), that Bonzo's Montreux was recorded at Mountain, thus the title.

 

Indeed! As per our pm's, I'd had Brothers and Sisters in mind as their Capricorn recording debut, and quite overlooked those early sessions in Feb '70 (strange they left it nearly three years between visits though, isn't it?).

As we discussed, I'm not convinced the snap of Duane and Berry was actually taken at Capricorn itself - it looks like a typical motel stairway - but I'm always glad to see pics of Duane posted here!

 

All the mastering studios I've used don't rely on nearfield monitoring. They may have them as an additional reference but they use large, sometimes audiophile speakers as their main source. See the attached picture I took of Hank Williams at Master Mix. Notice the three very large PMC speakers positioned like a really nice home setup augmented by the two smaller nearfields. He uses the large monitors 95% of the time. He uses the nearfields to check things like edits and fades.

Yes. I'm guessing there was something bad going on in his room. Either his monitors ran through an EQ (naughty) or he had room modes or improper acoustic treatment or any of several other issues.

 

Its always been flagged as Glyn Johns over on the zep sites, any ideas as to who it might be?

That Brubeck shot is great....simple mic setup. Today you would easily see over 6 mics on a drum kit alone.

Then I guess most engineers know how their mastering setup takes effect in the home audio world...however I'm still wondering how some masterings of the same engineer can be very different in tonality. My only explanation is, that maybe some source tapes are so extreme that they can't be EQ'ed to a "normal" level.
