Amazing neck of the musical woods.

    My favorite, roundabout those parts:

I was really unfamiliar with Anna Haase until I have heard the Chopin Polish Songs CD from this BC set ...

I recently ordered this set and it should arrive today. Does anybody have any thoughts on it?

Do you really expect to get through that whole set this weekend? That's a lot of listening.

    Handel: Concerti Grossi

George, Robin, Jay, Coop or others familiar with this work:

I'm sending in an order for Couperin's Concerts Royaux, Savall version (if you have it let me know your opinion of the music - I know Savall's performance has to be top shelf)...

But along with that, I'm considering Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op.6. Worth getting? If so, which version(s) are recommended?

    Thanks.

I don't know either of these well enough to recommend anyone. I bet Stuart will, though.

Thanks, guys. Maybe Stuart will chime in...

I was thinking of getting the Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 only because it's listed on Classical Net's Basic Repertoire list as an essential (with a "star"). I've never heard these concerti as far as I can recall, so not sure if it's one of his better works.

  16. Don't think I will make it all the way through but I listened to Rheingold (2 discs) and the first disc of Walkuere today.

I haven't listened to my '97 Solti Ring box set in a while but my first impression is that you get signifiantly more detail, especially during Walkuere it was definitely goose bump time. :righton:

The quality of the outer box is outstanding, the CDs come in a DVD type case with one CD on each side. I actually like the packaging of the individual Esoteric CDs better but it's the sound that matters.

Orpheus is Modern, McGeghan's Philharmonia Baroque is H.I.P.P. all the way. Both wonderful.

It was written is a state of high inspiration. The source of said inspiration is Corelli's even more inspired Op. 6. That's why I recommend both.

For Handel's Concerti Grossi, you cannot go wrong with the recording by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert. While the recording is some 20 years old, the level of performance and virtuority are something to cherish.
You may want to consider this set, which is quite reasonably priced ...

The 6-CD is available at some Amazon MarketPlace vendor for about $30.

Couperin works tend to be a bit bland when performed by some groups but Savall somehow spiced up the work.

Guys: Thanks for the recommendations on the Handel and Couperin - along with the Corelli recording, which I was also browsing earlier today.
